"Police told to shut 'places of temptation' Bangkok Post

Police were yesterday told to shut down places of temptation near schools after a survey found many schools are surrounded by them. Social Development and Human Security Minister Paiboon Wattanasiritham said a survey of 12 Bangkok schools conducted by parent and student networks from May 7-17 found that within a radius of 500 metres of most schools there were bars, karaoke clubs, internet cafes and shops selling video games, pornography, alcohol and cigarettes.

At a meeting with police, city officials and representatives of parents and students yesterday, Mr Paiboon said he is forming a special committee to close down such premises and urged police to enforce the law strictly to protect students.

Tiwaporn Petklab, 19, and chairperson of Bangkok Youth Council from Bang Khunthian district, told the meeting that football bookmakers, snooker clubs and shops with gambling machines were also operating near the schools.

The businesses belong to the parents of some students, she said. They use students who have fallen into debt from gambling to push drugs to other students.

Miss Tiwaporn said a public park on Rama II road and areas near the Memorial bridge are places where gang rapes have occurred. Pornographic CDs, she said, are available in the vicinity of schools in Saphan Lek and Ban Mor areas. She said she and her friends had been approached by pornographic film producers to perform in such films in exchange for 5,000-10,000 baht."

I wonder if school children can walk 500 meters?

internet cafes are a place of temptation.

wow within 500 meters too. no wonder they consider them surrounded. most gogo bars are almost unnoticable from the outside anyway.

and what is tempting about karaoke?

-This should not be a shock to most of us; for, we come from countries that have zoning laws. In the US you can't open a strip joint any where...you have to apply for a permit and have it oked by the town council. Sometimes I think Pattaya could use some zoning laws, but they wouldn't enforce them if they did. Yes, keep adult entertainment spots away from the schools.

I agree, keep the adult "entertainment" places away from the local schools... Most of us should not be surprised of restrictions of such since we come from Western countries that have city zoning laws. If someone wanted to open a Go-Go Club in an American city, he/she would first have to apply for a permit and the city council would have to ok the area it would be located in... Pattaya could benefit from some "zoning laws" but the city officials wouldn't enforce it if the laws did exist.

But the survey was only conducted using just over 400 people in a city of 10 million - not a representative sample nor statistically valid.
Some of the places of vice were noted to sell cigarettes and alcohol - could those be 7-11 and Family Mart. So it's not just the large supermarkets that face closure now its the convience corner shop too.
