Duriam? No, never heard of it! (moron)

Durian is a warming fruit. It actually raises your body temperature. However, I don't think eating a moderate amount of it along with some booze will actually kill you. A wives tale, it is. They don't go well together anyway.

Nicely done durain dishes are a highly regarded delicacy. Just try some if you’ve got a chance. You should try durian ice creme.

The trouble with durian is that the fruits stink like hell, and to open the fruit it’s sometimes stomach turning. Therefore many place to not allow staff or customers to bring any durian to there premises.

People die from drinking just whisky all the time. The durian plus booze equals certain death thing is a Thai myth. It is not true.

... ate loads of Durian, she loved it - I don't know how much she ate, but enough to cause her severe heartburn on one occasion and she ended up in hospital, they thought she had a heart attack. She passed away a while ago, not from too much Durian though. Similarly, her loving grandson, my ex. had some pickled by his grandmother - I remember seeing it in a jar, but I did not eat it, I'm not sure if my ex. did. Durian does stink though.

Just to be clear, don't go and eat a whole durian with a shitload of whisky, OK?
That will make you very warm indeed, and if you have a weak system, yeah, it might kill you.

But a moderate amount of durian and then going out and having a few drinks ... why not?
Durian does really warm you, you can really feel it when you eat alot of it.

Another common local belief is that the durian is harmful when eaten along with coffee[17] or alcoholic beverages.[5] The latter belief can be traced back at least to 18th century when Rumphius declared that one should not drink alcohol after eating durians as it will cause indigestion and bad breath. J. D. Gimlette stated in his Malay Poisons and Charm Cures (1929) that it was said that the durian fruit must not be eaten with brandy. In 1981, J. R. Croft wrote in his Bombacaceae: In Handbooks of the Flora of Papua New Guinea that a feeling of morbidity often follows the consumption of alcohol too soon after eating durian. Several medical investigations on the validity of this belief have been conducted, with varying conclusions.[5]

Durian stinks. Many say it smells of rotting flesh. In season many hotels forbid it being brought in due to the stench.

I was told that the eat durian and drink then you die is an ancient urban myth which seems eminently likely.

There are currently 30 recognised species (see text)

The durian (IPA: [d̪uˈɾi.ɑn]) is the fruit of trees of the genus Durio belonging to the Malvaceae, a large family which includes hibiscus, okra, cotton, mallows and linden trees. Widely known and revered in Southeast Asia as the "King of Fruits,"[1] the fruit is distinctive for its large size, unique odour, and a formidable thorn-covered husk. Its name comes from the Malay word duri (thorn) together with Malay suffix that is -an (for building a noun in Malay), meaning "thorny fruit."[2][3]

There are 30 recognised Durio species, all native to Southeast Asia and at least nine of which produce edible fruit.[4] Durio zibethinus is the only species available in the international market; other species are sold in their local region.

The fruit can grow up to 30 centimetres (12 in) long and 15 centimetres (6 in) in diameter,[5][6] and typically weighs one to three kilograms (2 to 7 lbs).[5] Its shape ranges from oblong to round, the colour of its husk green to brown and its flesh pale-yellow to red, depending on species.[5] The hard outer husk is covered with sharp, prickly thorns, while the edible custard-like flesh within emits the strong, distinctive odour, which is regarded as either fragrant or overpowering and offensive. The taste of the flesh has been described as nutty and sweet."

Durian, being prepared for sampling at a tourist farm.

The best description I've heard was that it was "rather like eating a heavenly custard in an outhouse".

It was tasty, once you get past the aroma of it.

I just called my former bf in Bangkok, and he said the alcohol thing is an Urban Legend.

He did caution, though, to avoid alcohol until the fruit was digested, because the mixture could make you feel hot and flushed.

Not "dead." "Hot and flushed."
I agree, its not true. But most Thais seem to believe it, based on no scientific proof. And so it goes.
People are dying all the time in Pattaya because of viagra, alchohol, hot sex, and hot weather. Add durian, and who knows?
I love the stuff. Its really cheap now too. After eating lots of it, the last thing I want to do is drink anyway. The best durian I have had is D24 in Singapore. Better than Thai durian.
Its fattening too.

Easy that.
Pan Pan on Thappraya a bit north of the Complex has a rich version of it. Pair it with an Italian dry cake to make it even better.

In some places in Pattaya and Patong Beach, and probably elsewhere, you can buy Durian in a prepared form, i.e. just the flesh without the prickly skin. It is sold wrapped in film, and looks dirty white, and quite unattractive unless you know what it is. A typical pack costs about 80 to 100 Baht. Better to go for the higher priced ones, as the cheaper ones may be going "off".

In Pattaya Durian is sold this way at one or two of the fruit stalls in the car/bus park area outside the Mike shopping mall, on 2nd road. In Patong Beach it is sold at fruit stalls in the main road outside the Paradise complex, Rat-u-thit road.

Try it, it's interesting, even if you don't buy it again. I am sure you can buy it in Bangkok too.

I've actually found some of my best durian at the large grocery stores. They sell pieces under plastic. Even if the sign says not to, don't ever buy it without at least a quick squeeze. You don't want too hard OR too soft. You can also smell it through the plastic to see if it a very smelly one. Bigger chunks are usually best. Smaller often have lots of seeds, so you are paying for the heavy seeds.

The trouble with buying fresh durian from the vendors is that unless you are a durian expert, you won't have any idea how to properly select a good one, and sometimes the vendors will deliberately sell you a bad one (you are a dumb farang). Of couse, I have also had ones bought by Thais which were also bad. When they are bad, they can very bad. Sometimes even bloated with insects. Yummy!

Duriam as it is pronounced in certain parts of Australia, or Durian as spoken in Thailand is purportedly an aphrodisiac, the longer stalked varieties make for better erections. You will always see housewives and houseboys fondling the stalk when choosing. Also tapping the shell with the back of a heavy knife, the more solid the sound the better, is good way to test for size of the inner organ. The giant testicular shaped flesh is held in the cupped hand and weighed, the heavier the better.

I once sent the boy out to buy fruit when I was staying on Phuket a few years ago, and he returned proudly with this giant spiky monster. I dont know if it was just the rainy season, but the stench was unbearable. I of course ate quite a lot of it, to see if its legendary powers had any substance to them. The rest I got him to bury in the soft sand under the coconut trees, not before he had also had his fill of course. The taste was peppery sweet and surprisingly good, but that stench?

Does it work? Well it was hard to tell, because most of the time I have an erection already, and just thinking about my cock also tends to send it jerking upwards, so truth be told I dont know. I will report back in about thirty years when I am an old man, right now I am just to young to be able to test the team with any degree of accuracy, so for me, mangosteen is by far the more delicious and juicy alternative.

Well, I agree mangosteen is super delicious, but durian is in a class by itself.
I have sometimes felt sexual effects from durian, but not consistently, and when I have, it is usually several hours or the next day after eating it. The modern pills are a better bet for sure.
