"One of the best and most authentic French restaurants in Pattaya, Au Bon Coin, has completed its move from the International Hospital area near beach Road in downtown Pattaya to the Pratamnak Hill area between Pattaya and Jomtien.

The location is a wooded lot and it looks much like a country "auberge" in Provence. It's down the hill from Pratamnak Road, heading toward the ocean.

It's located on one of those small nameless sois that run between Soi 5 and Soi 6, heading maybe 300 meters downhill from Pratamnak. Turn where you see for a small red sign with the name "Au Bon Coin" on the corner.

It's open for business five days a week, closed wednesday and thursdays.
If you want genuine French country fare in a lovely intimate setting, this is the place to go. Tel: 038 364 542

(In case you want to know, I am not being paid for this plug, nor do I own the place )"

This excellent French Bistro/Restaurant has been a long favourite though not visited enough as it was way down on Pattaya Beach Road Soi 5. Now it has moved to Jomtien where all the fine dining seems to have moved or be headed.

The easiest directions are to take Pratumnak Road off Thappahaya Road. Turn first left, direction Adriatic hotel. After the View Talay Mansions development it is the third road on the right. There is a tiny semi-illegible red sign at the entrance to the soi. Proceed down this modest laner until you see the gatepost lights.

It is very new and there is obviously work to be done. The security guard shows you along the unlit path to the restaurant through what looks like a potentially fabulous garden with huge mature trees. You can see the cozy restaurant twinkling through the leaves. It is in an old teak wooden chateau and has great charm. The ambiance is much as the old restaurant even down to the table runners which have really passed useful life.

The menu is much as before with many French classics. We enjoyed crab salads, meat and potato salad and a delicious stuffed squids in tomato sauce. There is plenty of nice bread to mop up the juices. We all plumped for the roast Beef with Gratin Dauphinoise and were very pleased indeed. It was a generous portion of roast fillet delicious and moist and tasty.

Sadly the aircon had given up much of it's power and the place was very warm Poor Patron Joseph - no sylph - was suffering even more than the customers. Despite most customers all arriving about eight o'clock service was not prolonged, attentive and cheery. Many of Pattaya's Geriatrice Dore' were there and all approved of the food heartily though not all were happy with the temperature. The bill for four with a couple of bottles of a Cahors was very reasonable - a smidgen over 4000 baht for four.

We called in at Pan Pan for some of their delighful airconditioning and forced down some home made ice creams and gateaux with our coffees.

The notice on the gate says Closed Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Reservation would be advisable - 038 364 542 - and check that they have the aircon fixed. I think that this is a place to watch and if the garden is developed could become somewhere very special indeed. Sadly not the easiest place to get to without transport.

They had best offer free transport in and out or they will go out of business within a year.

Jose (the owner) has been dishing out excellent food for many years in Pattaya. Like many others, he has realised that Jomtien is the place to be. Even though he may be out of the way on Pratamnak Soi 6, he was out of the way before in Pattaya Soi 5 and survived many many years. His food is some of the best in town, something to rival the better restaurants in Jomtien even though the setting is a little more rustic - but what's wrong with rustic with great food.
We welcome him as an excellent addition to the Jomtien food scene.

Jomtien - Great food!
