View Full Version : Thaksin faces lese majeste claims
Thai police have recommended that former PM Thaksin Shinawatra is charged on three counts of insulting the king.
This is being reported by the BBC here (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/asia-pacific/6470389.stm)
My money says will never come to court.
Would have to be reported - and they woudnt want that in case he was not guilty!
Threatening to use the lese majeste charge is one favoured by many, but especially the palace, for silencing their critics. It's often a case of "many are threatened but few are prosecuted". The most famous use of the lese majeste power is to stifle open debate about the economic policies the Thai government is pursuing. Since these policies have been proposed by the King (and widely criticised outside Thailand, and implicitly by Thaksin himself when in office) they are above rational discussion and debate
