I just got my hands on a Treo 680 PDA Phone. It is unlocked and can be used anywhere in the world on the GSM network. I first planned to use the phone along with my laptop in Thailand but I am starting to think that I may leave my Laptop at home and make full use of my cell phone.

Anyone know which service is best for phone/wireless Internet service along with SMS messaging.

ItтАЩs really pending where you are going to use mobile phone services.

In and around Bangkok, Pattaya, Chiang Mi and other major cities, all providers like AIS, DTAC etc. are OK.

In less developed areas, AIS is still the best option, DTAC might be the second best.

Inside Bangkok airport on your way out you will pass both providers AIS and DTAC. There are next to each other. For a small fee they will provide you with your own SIM card, allowing instant access to GSM networks in Thailand. Make sure they set up your phone in English language.

I would not recommend using your own foreign phone number since everybody might as you for your (new) Thai phone number. Mobile phone calls within Thailand are pretty inexpensive.

Best buy is a pre-paid card which can be refilled virtually everywhere, i.e. corner shops.

While youтАЩre dealing with the AIS or DTAG service team take especially care of your belongings since both stalls are positioned in a bottle-neck with many people pushing there way in and out. ItтАЩs a perfect location for pick-pockets.

ttom is right, AIS or DTAC are OK. My Blackberry logs-on to either and gives no problems with service. Don't worry about it Buck.

As for SMS - every teenager sends hundreds of SMS's from their hand-phone every week. No need for fancy equipment for that. Is this not the same in Delaware?

Here in Delaware I try not to mess with teenagers LOL :) I tend to run with an older crowd out here. Most of them don't check their phones for SMS messages or they complain that it costs .15 cent per....

With my Treo 650 on the CDMA service, I am able to use the phones keypad and send SMS with ease but my friends complain their phones are difficult to reply with.

I was with 12Call on my old Thai Phone. Is 12call any-good for a smart phone?
