GO ARTHIT!!!!

KAZAKHSTAN 52, THAILAND 1

Changchun, China -- Kazakhstan scored 52 goals against Thailand in the Asian Winter Games hockey competition yesterday, but the goal that brought the most cheers came from the outgunned Thais.

The Asian hockey little guys went into the game knowing they were going to lose to tournament favourite Kazakhstan, but an opportune goal seven minutes into the third period was celebration enough in the 52-1 loss.

The hero was forward Arthit Thamwongsin, who jumped on a rebound off the boards to slam a shot past Kazakhstani goaltender Sergey Ogureshnikov.

Up to that point, the highlight for the Thais had been when defenceman Teranai Harnnarujchai bodychecked one of the linesmen.

The Thais were outshot 97-7, with six of Thailand's shots made in the third period as the Thais managed a few chances, including a breakaway that Ogureshnikov stopped.

Do they have any place in Bangkok (or Thailand) to go ice skating?

For the public I mean not the hockey players.

Quite right ... a lot of fun actually. as I finally discovered a venue (the Ladprao Mall as BGenius mentions above) where my dear old man was NOT physically graceful: i.e. an ice skating rink where his Canadian Old Fart was finally able to match him one-on-one in the athletic department.

Where the Thai hockey team practices I have no idea, but I'm sure the available arenas are few and far between. Lots of gumption (and sanook) on this team for sure. They probably exemplify what real old fashioned amateur ice hockey was all about in late 19th century Canada.

Cheers ...

A couple years ago, in Chiang Mai, young man said I was Mai Dee when he told me he sprained his wrist when fell while ice skating--Because I laughed?... Yes--But even worse: because I said, "Ice skating? In Thailand! I think... too much chuk wow."
But we kissed and made up.
And then came the happy ending.
