Well calls from Thailand to the UK are much cheaper than the price you have quoted to Laos!! Try using the 008 prefix.

7 Baht a min is pretty cheap. I doubt if you will do better than that. (its only 10 pence)

Depends whether and where he lives in Vientiane. From Fa Ngum and other places near the river you can access the Thai system. If this is a possibility, you might care to give him a Thai SIM. Otherwise international calls (Worldwide) from Lao are Kip2000/minute.

2000 Kip is about 7.39 odd bht (at today's rate) the same as the price it is to ring Thailand to Lao - that's if billyhouston's rate per minute is correct.
