When I was there 5 years ago, it wasn't a place to find a boy, it was a place to relax with a boy.

What are the 'must do' things whilst I am there. Also I read on Utopia that there are a couple of gay places? Seems unlikely to me.

So, anyone please give me some suggestions (nice ones please).

If you're looking for company take a boy with you. There are very few opportunities of finding night-time entertainment on the island. As for gay places - I have been there three times, the last time about 10 months ago, and have never found any such establishments. There are a few free-lancers roaming about (for example, boys who work in the hotels/guesthouses, pickup truck drivers, boatmen, fishermen etc etc) - OK if you like them a bit rough looking but, for me, there's nothing worse than calloused hands caressing your body, it's like being rubbed down with sandpaper - UGH.

The island is pretty but undergoing dramatic alterations. But after having seen most of it within three days you might start asking yourself what your where doing there. Accommodation in average is nothing special but doesn’t come cheap. Same is for food and drinks.

No specific gay places. There only one or two really lively pubs cater during weekends a slightly mixed Bangkokian crowd. No Name Bar at Kai Bae Beach should also be open and is the nearest thing what you expect for a gay place.

Bars like KC Bar, White Sand Beach, behind 7-Eleven, or Mankeyto Bar (beer bar furter on.

What else on Kho Chang? Often load of backpackers; endless mosquitoes (Koh Chang is notorious for Malaria) so take a good local made repelling spray. Have some good books with you and a handsome companion, otherwise you might feel lonely soon.

Trat on mainland is a sleepy town but does offer in my humbly opinion more than Koh Chang.

While being around, why not having a look at Rayong which might turn out more interesting. Parts of the rocky coastline can be spectacular. Rayon is a sparkling town.

I'm interested in all the above information as my Boyfriend is always on about going to Koh Chang. He's never been and I can't really understand why he wants to go so much. It wouldn't be for any Gay life though as he won't go into Gay bars etc so we always avoid such places when we're together.

Koh Chang is a fashionable tourist spot in Thailand and appearing in press in TV very often. No wonder your friend is curious about the island.

Most tourists are either Thai, mostly from Bangkok, or younger foreigners coming from Khousan Road or other backpack spots, still believing old editions of travel guides: “cheap, exotic, natural, beautiful, full moon nights” and therefore more”.

Large parts of Koh Chang are still owned by a certain politician who is presently not en vogue anymore. He wanted to turn the island into an upper-class holiday destination, probably including gambling casino. Before 2001 access to Koh Chang could often be limited due to heavy military presence. He changed that, just soon after he (or family) bought the most valuable parts. The government pumped accordingly a lot of cash into the infrastructure “in order to promote tourism”. They also connected the island with mainland by a new electrical power cable.

The good thing with the military regime was they didn’t touch the large proportions of unspoiled natural areas which are the most valuable assets of Koh Chang. Trekking is therefore in and so is snorkelling.

The island is also a perfect mosquito breeding ground….

Not sure what TTom is talking about. Utopia's listings seem to be the same as his own recommendations, but with more info provided. I don't see any references to gay bars on Koh Chang, only gay-friendly places that may or may not be happening in off season.

Koh Chang is a beautiful, romantic get-away with your special someone. As Utopia says, "it's happily non-commercial, relaxed, and unpretentious. Wind down and get into the tropical groove."

Well it is 5 years ago I was there, I know a lot of things have changed into an upmarket destination. Alas, I found a very romantic place at that time, and it is still there. On their homepage it does not look like anything has changes at the resort, but the rates have gone up 50%. Well I have always dreamed of going back for the nature and romantic look of the sunset, the sea, but I am not sure it will be the same after Thaksim, his friends and family had this influence on the island. Of course everything change over years, but......
BTW yes there were a lot of mosquitoes, but I really don't believe it is a Malaria area anymore. Koh Samet had problems with malaria before too, but it is years ago.

I am not sure if you can email unless you are a member but that is up to you
It is certainly one way of getting local info. You might get them to join the forum and give local info from time to time
