Thanks, wowpow.

I wonder why Yahoo says 35.5 baht/dollar, Bangkok Post website says 36.82. What do people on the street in Bangkok actually get these days?

Thursday 4th Jan at 00.23 hrs Bangkok Bank 1US$ = 35.64. Bangkok Post uses this website for it's rates but still shows 36.8. I guess it's a time difference.

The rates actually fluctuate a lot during the day see:

About this time last year, in this place, I predicted the baht at 80:┬г. We have had a coup and bombs and the baht is, more or less, exactly the same as this time last year, sniffing at the 69... don't we all.

But why? There is no justification for its present level. I do believe the government is backing and buying it big time... remember Labour doing it in the Wilson years until eventually came the devaluation and the infamous, "The pound in your pocket...." Buying your own money with freshly printed money is not safe.

I am going to stick to the baht hitting 80 in February 2007. If it doesn't I shall still be happy for my investments out there are safe, for a little longer....

... the Bank of Thailand or who ever is in charge of Finance prefers a weaker bht, so I don't think "Thailand" is doing anything. However, as has been happening in recent months, people are investing in Thailand quite extensively, hence the strong bht. I actually thought the same that the bht would be weaker due to certain activities. I'm just wondering what now will happen to the currency.

Wowpow that drop off at 12pm (GMT) is caused by Ms Tarisa going home for the day...

If you get 1 or 2 percent less than the Interbank rate you are doing well.

Thanks again for the info, wowpow, but this is fairly depressing. I leave for Thailand in less than 2 weeks, and I was hoping that the bombings would really spike the US dollar, maybe get us back to 40 - 45 baht / $. But it now looks like my usual 500 baht tip is going to set me back a whopping $14. But 2 weeks is an eternity in Thai politics, so maybe there's still hope for more bad news for the baht. :clock:

500 baht is far too much to tip the luggage porter at your hotel. 20 or 30 baht is quite enough.

I have been through times with the UK┬г when abroad was terribly expensive. At the moment the tables are turned and for US citizens the rest of the world has become and expensive place. It will not last for ever. If the US is sick financially then the rest of the world will follow soon after.

Though the baht is quite strong, mainly due to currency, speculators, it's the American dollar which is lowering in value internationally.

Porters who give special services should be paid accordingly...
