Busy or quiet? We speak with Bar Owners on Walking Street.

On тАЬChristmas DayтАЭ night we made our way down to Walking Street in South Pattaya to take in some of the festive atmosphere. We were pleased to see that the street was busy; however one of the major complaints from bar owners this year is that tourists are walking but not spending money in the bars. Over the past few days we have spoken with many bar owners who have mixed views on reports that tourist numbers are significantly down this year. Some bars reported 20-30% increases in trade from this time last year with others reporting up to 50% decreases. Reports in the local media have suggested that overall tourism is down by 50%. We believe this figure is pure speculation and is not based on any official figures which will be released after the high season is over. From what we saw and have seen over the last week, we expect this figure to be around 20-30% down from last year. On a positive note the atmosphere in the South Pattaya area was good with many making the effort and sporting festive costumes and we saw plenty of bars full of customers enjoying what Pattaya has to offer.

With a name like Walking Street WTH do they expect! Maybe they should change the name to Getting Falling-Down Drunk :drunken: --And Rolled Street--Or make their bust-out joints look a little less like bust-out joints.
Maybe have the go-go girls dye their pubic hair magenta & shave it to look like Tickle Me Elmo
or spit cute little puppies instead of gold fish--
Or take down those signs that say, "Ladies Drink Free!... Tourists...200 Baht."
Or?...

.... and it ain't tourism - people are aware that when they walk into a bar in Pattaya, the appearance of that bar will send them running, they know instantly what they are up for and probably avoid them -- however, I bet the bars and businesses such as the coffee bars, Hard Rock Cafe, reputable restaurants, hotels etc are the businesses that are doing well.

tacky chain hotels and crappy theme restaurants from America = reputable. Now I understand.

According to Wikipedia, Hard Rock cafe was founded by British entrepreneurs - not Americans - and remained British-run until less than a month ago (7 December 2006) when it was sold to - of all people! - the Seminole Tribe of Florida for US$965 million. Their new acquisition included 124 Hard Rock Cafes, four Hard Rock Hotels, two Hard Rock Casino Hotels, two Hard Rock Live! concert venues, and stakes in three unbranded hotels.

.... to a Hard Rock Cafe or reputable restaurant where there are lots of customers, in which case food is not "hanging around" too long and everything that goes with it, even Pizza Hut to a certain degree, as opposed to a trashy place offering cheap food, no customers, trashy surroundings - it says it all.

Now ideally a 5 star restaurant would be fine by me, like the Ivy in London. Quality Quality Quality

If you'd rather go to Pizza Hut than enjoy local food made by real cooks...that's really sad. Gimme papaya salad, tom yum, thai curry, etc any day. And if you're skipping the food stalls (the fat women making roti, esan food, etc) then you're realling missing out. Those women rock.
