New airport too small (shock! horror!)

Don Muang airport, which closed in late September after 92 years of service, may return as Bangkok's second airport because Suvarnabhumi airport is now congested. Deputy Transport Minister Sansern Wongcha-um said passenger and airline inconvenience at Suvarnabhumi airport had prompted airline operators to demand Don Muang airport be reopened, and revive a plan to use both Suvarnabhumi and Don Muang airports to serve Bangkok's air traffic. On Wednesday he chaired a meeting with current and former executives of Airports of Thailand (AoT) and representatives of the Civil Aviation Department, low-cost airlines and the Airline Operators Committee. Mr Sansern said AoT would now review its Suvarnabhumi master plan. An AoT source said a prompt decision on reopening Don Muang could allow Bangkok to serve heavy traffic during the upcoming New Year and Chinese New Year festivals, as Suvarnabhumi airport could not handle any more flights.

Suvarnabhumi was out of coffee this morning. I first went one place, then another and another, no coffee. Even Black Canyon and Starbucks gave me the "no have" , very strange. The airport was packed with people.

Then I had taxi troubles. The lines were long, so we jumped in a taxi on the departure floor. The driver's linger there in hopes of a fare. He looked like he turned on the meter but did not, it was covered with a towel. After entering the exit ramp he announced that the price would be 500B. We could not get out. The BF and he got in an argument and he lowered the price to 300B. That's about 100B over the what a meter would have cost. That's the fist time in a long time that encountered a problem from a taxi driver. The driver said if the police caught him he gets fined 1000B.

I still like Suvarnabhumi, it's a fine airport but many cities have more than one, I think that Don Muang should make a come back at airport number 2.

You're lucky you had your b/f with you! What about the poor farang unable to speak/argue in Thai - how many others has this driver ripped off?

I hope that you told your b/f to tell the driver that his taxi number had been noted and was going to be reported to the police or official taxi office at the airport ?

p/s You're also surprisingly lucky that it is the first time in a long time you have troubles with taxis. I seem to get at least one rip-off taxi every time I come to Thailand.
