Merry Christmas, Cedric, and heart felt seasonтАЩs greetings to you.

I have put Puccini on, and opened a fine bottle of NZ Sauvignon Blanc to mark your return to the home of us, Africa. I have lit candles from the Galilee, and I have flavoured my home with the scent of the Banda islandsтАЩ; nutmeg and mace. I wish you glad tidings this holiday season, as you prepare to leave Hong Kong to fly far away to home.

It is summer here, a poor summer, but summer nevertheless. The days are long and the sky today was a rich clear blue, the light so bright I had to go indoors. I was surrounded by green hills of memory, with stands of pine and groves of Totara, Rimu and Kahikatea, and long blades of grass, warmed in the shinning sun, tossed in the gentle breeze like a young girlтАЩs hair. Seagulls were idling overhead riding the warm updrafts, and Pohutukawa, with rich crimson flowers and new leaves of silver, framed the infinite turquoise of the endless Pacific sea.

When you are in Kenya, can you do us all one small favour for Christmas? Plant an acacia tree and name it Thailand.

Thanks.

Dearest aunty thanks for the greetings, may I wish you all the best for the year of the pig.

I planted many trees quite a few of them acacia's. With all the good rain I just know they will do very well. I will call the tree next to the kitchen Thailand, it is not much of a kitchen just three tiled walls and a roof but it is where I spend most of the time when relaxing. The tree will one-day be a magnificent flat crown as big as the sky.

It was tremendous being back in Africa, back home. Life for everyone seemed to concentrate around a shortage of rain food and sex, plus copious cups of milky tea.

The rains did at leastst come to the farm in great big walls of water after much intense and unbearable heat, putting us all in high spirits. The fishing was good and we also managed to pot a few birds, so we had a sumptuous Christmas dinner of roast fish and guinea fowl.
Most of the time I spent fixing up the camp and repairing the water pipes that the elephants dug up during the dry, and avoiding colliding with them on the road backwards and forwards to the hardware store. For the rest I was just very very happy being home, a great part of me will always remain there.
To be honest i feel a bit sad and lost to be back here, but I am sure i will warm again to the Chinese way. In the meantime I am planning a few days in Thailand to celebrate the lunar new-year, the land of smiles always manages somehow to mend the yearning in our souls.
