I not seen anyone post on this topic, so apologies if this has already been discussed. Anyone who reads Stickman might be interested that his real identity (name, personal photo, name of his employer) has been made public by a certain blogger. This was a serious problem for Stick because he does PI (private investigations) work, as well as holding down a teaching job in a prestigous Bangkok school. The Stickman website is up at the moment, but most of the content is now unreachable. It is unknown at this time whether the site will be revived. I know that Stick is a polarizing character, but I've always enjoyed reading his weekly. In my personal contacts with him I have found him to be very kind, polite, and helpful, and I hope he can get his current issues resolved.

Stickman's identity is hardly a well-kept secret, even by Thailand's standards. There aren't too many thirtysomething New Zealanders not qualified to teach English married to non-Buddhist Thais from Isaan holding down teaching jobs in Bangkok schools. (All of the preceeding can be readily gleaned from his site). You imagine his employers don't know who he is already, and haven't been informed over and over again by the usual busybodies? Dream on

I too have always enjoyed his weekly columns. Hope the following posted from his site is true.

"I have decided to take a short break from updating this site to concentrate on my day job. The break is needed, but not permanent. Full service will resume soon..."

I appreciate his listing of wi-fi spots (mostly freebees) in Bangkok. Nice to have a list all together in one place ( http://www.stickmanbangkok.com/wifi.htm )
I especially enjoyed this twee little proviso he wrote when listing Telephone Pub on Silom Soi 4 as a wi-fi-friendly spot (Stickman website is pretty straight indeed ... but fun):

Be aware that most of the venues in Silom soi 4 cater to gays and alternative lifestyle folks so if that is not your thing, you might want to go to one of the other establishment with a free wi-fi hot spot in the immediate area. Still, this soi can be a bit of a laugh if you're open-minded and don't have any hang ups.

You gotta love this one as well:

WearEver Laundromat (??? TiT) & Lounge

(Between Samsen Road Sois 1 and 3)

Located just over the bridge north of Khao San Road, wi-fi is free for customers using their coin-operated washers and dryer or for those just dropping in for a drink.

Hope he gets his shit together with his site business.

Cheers ...

It would be a shame if the same thing happened to Gaybutton or Hedda, wouldn't it?

Not sure what you are all talking about. His website said he was taking a break from the

site for a while to spend more time on his "normal job".

What is wrong with taking a break?

What is with тАЬhope he gets his shit together soon....Hope he resolves current issues etc etc."

What shit are you speaking of? What issues are apparently known to you guys.

I feel that I am missing something here. Is anyone else confused about this? Can someone enlighten us?

Geared mainly toward breeders, it is still is/was an interesting site about Thailand and Thai/Farang relationships.

Best Regards.

The facts of the matter are correct as stated above: his identity (surely the worst kept secret in Bangkok anyway) was compromised, and he's worried about how that might affect his comfortable existence in the land of smiles. He's not just taken a break, he's removed all past Stickman Weekly installments from the website.

Speaking of disappearing acts, it's been nearly two weeks since the last Huminturd Dropping. Perhaps he's gone to the big discussion forum in the sky (wearing a button-down plaid dress shirt, no doubt).

The links below will give you all the details. One thing not mentioned in these articles is that "David" from Mangosauce has been in a longstanding feud with Stickman. 'Mangosauce' and 'Notstickman' now link to each other. The name "John Galt" is a reference to a character in Atlas Shrugged, by Ayn Rand..the "man who stopped the motor of the world".

Thank you for the info BG and for the links Dboy.

I guess I need to spend more time on the Internet.

I will check out the links provided.

My only question now is why has Stick disappeared? Seems he would like to

set the record straight.

I guess time will tell.

Thank again.

He is terrified that the Thai authorities might want to kick him out of the country for reporting on its less savory side (as a worst-case scenario), otherwise, he's worried about losing his English teaching job.

It's possible that some/all of the allegations are true, such as that his supposedly "unbiased coverage" was really just disguised advertising to make a few bucks. Hope it's not true, but that could explain why the weeklies are gone, but the user posts are back.

His departure would be as missed as the departure of the Post's Week That Was, though Stickman is kept at a distance (NO time!) from me.

Could someone translate that last comment for me?

Maybe it was the EggNog from last night.

In the early internet years about the mid 90's there was an expat, probably based in Pattaya, whom I will only identify as Alan (NOT Allen), who pretty much was the most popular poster on what was then surely the internet's most popular posting board about Thailand, the soc.culture.thai Usenet Newsgroup. Alan had already got started in internet posting groups by running some of his own BBS's in the pre-internet years. I think he even made one of his BBS's available on the internet, for which most people then used a shell, not graphic, interface at the time (eventually Mosaic came along). As to soc.culture.thai, yes, MOST of the hardhitting, barebones issues beaten to death on this board like threats and litigations among posters (who were KNOWN at that time), what can and cannot be said in Thailand, expat views on Thai life, on and on and on all had predecessor discussion on that board a long long long time ago. Sawatdee discussion is nothing new here (but breeds its own very unique variations). In fact I bet that some of Pattaya Gay/Sawatdee posters probably were soc.culture.thai posters, as I was, as I recogniize some things. Anyway, as USENET fell to anonymity, spammers, trolls and web discussions moved in Alan 'resigned' from soc.culture.thai (or something like that) but continued to produce a weekly newsletter called the Bangkok Post "Week in Review", based on some relationship he had with the Post which I do not know the details of. The Week in Review was a spoof rendition of all the hankerings in the Thai news written somewhat in the tradition of "The Week that Was" a similarly motivated popular American weekly 60s/70s show. I see similarities in styles between that and Stickman. It had a big following and was, well, pretty damn funny at times, however, the Bangkok Post threatened to sue him (net rumours) which was probably confirmed by a VERY bitter final hurrah sent to the newsletter email list, after which nothing was ever heard of it again.

Must have been b4 your time, BigBen. RU a NewBie here?

Yes, NBB, I am new here. I have only lived here in Thailand since October 2003.

I remember reading some B.Trinks articles but never Post's week in review articles.

Thank you for taking the time to share some precious memories of Bangkok.

I was wondering what had happened to the Stickman site.
Reading the Mangosauce and Notstickman sites was a real eye opener. These Heteros really go after each other with brickbats. I wouldn't be surprised to see someone floating face down in a Khlong before the end of it. It makes all the dramas at Sawatee look like a bunch of sissies and Homos having a handbag fight.

Waitaminute! The dramas at Sawatee ARE a bunch of sissies and Homos having handbag fights!

THX fdor the heads up, Smiles. In about a minute I decided I'd have THAT "late-night TV" on ignore for a long time! Complaining about paying an extra 100 basht for a "bar fine" was enuf, it goes much further than that I think. Not even worth raising discussion over.
