Hey guys

Here are a series of pics and videos from the gay pride celebrations just concluded in Bangkok, Thailand.

And that is supposed to make us feel "proud"?

November 7th, 2006, 10:33
It is not supposed to "make" you feel anything. Either you feel it or you don't. Either it is something
from within you or it is not. It can't be made to be there for you.

For many people seeing masses of diverse individuals sharing a common theme, a common bond, a common
interest, evokes feeling of pride. Pride that there are other likeminded people. Pride that we don't have to
face our inner selves alone. Pride that there is diversity that is accepted as a whole. Pride that we can be
who we are without fear.

Pride comes from within. Either you have it, or you don't. Noone can or will attempt to make those not
feeling any sense of comraderie, community, togetherness or pride, feel that way.

The post wasn't made to convince anyone to feel anything. It is just a way of sharing the pride that we felt
in seeing the positive community face that was put on by the gay community..the diversity that was responsibly
displayed..the coming together of many walks of life in support of freedom of lifestyle and choice.... we were
proud of everyone involved, in those that took part, in those that exhibited and marched....for making their voice
heard. For giving the world a chance to see that we are not demons to be feared but other people simply desiring
to live our lives how we choose to live them, in our own way, in our own right. Yes, for that we are proud. If you
are not, then there is nothing we can do, nor want to do to "make" you feel that.

I don't see a "diverse group of people" in those pictures. I see a bunch of drag queens and male prostitutes. I do not feel in any way, shape, or form "proud" that these people have somehow become the poster boys for the gay community as a whole.

Well why didn't you go along then as an alternative exapmle of gay life?

Many people have forgotten (perhaps many never knew) that the moment that's marked as the beginning of the "Pride" movement was the "Stonewall Riots" which began when New York police arrested a number of (mostly) drag queens and other disreputable people including, undoubtedly, some male prostitutes who wear mourning the death of Judy Garland. The riots followed. I'm happy to be a person of no repute (or possibly ill-repute) and I believe that it's those amongst us who want us to be "respectable" and "married" who are our worst oppressors. I'm not surprised, needless to say, to find boygeenyus among that number

Having said all that, I never went near any Pride event in Bangkok

Gayrice - What a great library of photographs of gay events and especially handsome man competitions. They certainly do grow them well in Thailand. There are superstars who seem to appear in several and win some and then they disappear. I often wonder why they do it as the prizes are not huge and the majority win nothing - still I am glad that they do.

I did not know of your site before. It is now firmly in my bookmarks.

Again thank you

What does a male beauty contest, participated in almost exclusively by straight males, have to do with "gay pride"? The answer is obvious: nothing more than the Miss Universe contest -- a beauty contest for straight females -- has to do with gay pride.

interest, evokes feeling of pride. Pride that there are other likeminded people. Pride that we don't have to
face our inner selves alone. Pride that there is diversity that is accepted as a whole. Pride that we can be

The diversity was in the thousands upon thousands of people that lined Silom road cheering, clapping, showing their
support to those who were either chosen to be , or chose themselves to be, marching in support of their community,
as an example of the color, the diversity, and the broad makeup of the individuals that come from every walk of
life to make what we call, a community.

There were other than drag queens and male prostitutes in the parade. There were staff members from balcony, telephone,
dicks cafe, a lesbian couple who were just married in a symbolistic ceremony... I would hardly call the band members male
prostitutes....and many of them were girls...real ones.. I would hardly call the Lesbian contingencies prostitutes or drag queens.

This was a display of Thailand's gay culture, in as diverse a manner as they could, in as big a way as many have seen in years. As it is the nature of Thai people to be shy and not put themselves
out in front of anything, one would not expect to see a parade of bankers, or shop keepers, or nurses, or lawyers or many other
professions marching in a parade (at this point) but they were there...in the throngs, lining the street, cheering, adulating,
feeling the pride that some seem to be having trouble identifying with....the pride that those in the parade, either by choice
or not, were there, putting on a face, being counted, and putting a less than demonistic face on the gay community.

This festival, these events, this parade was leap years better than what has been a steadily declining event in years past and
went a long long way toward opening the arms of the community and hopefully the minds of those in attendance to see that the
gay community is here, it is not going away, and it is not the monster that people try to make it out to be.

I am proud of that.

Why thank you kind Sir. I will try that.

It used to work fine with capitals but no more.
It does not work for me if I get the by clicking on the list 'Img'
across the top of the reply/compose page.
It does not work if I try to upload from my desktop using the 'Add image to post' higher on the reply/compose page
Same same URLs but they load automatically.

I seem to have to do everything by HAND these days?

I hate to say this but I am in agreement with BoyG. I dropped in Pride in the Park, the same few mostly farang venues promoting their business and the farangs that patronize those venues. The only Thai boy are those employed by those venues and many of them are not gay.

There is a whole other world of Thai gay people out there that are either not include in this event or perhaps ignore Pride.

Thailand has never persecuted gays in anyway like the Western and Islam world and I am not sure a parade is a way to gain respect.

BKK Pride is about money not PRIDE. Just my opinion. [/quote]

(Bravo Smiles that info in your message cracked it - I'll copy your message to Junks and others who have had similar problems.)

Kudos to Khun Lucas of Tarntawan Hotel and Dick's Cafes Jomtien and Bangkok plus Balls bar. Always ready to give his time and efforts to gay and gay charitable promotions and always ready to take part himself and lead from the front. I know of no other Farang gay business owner who does the same other then in a frock.

I am not suggesting that there is not a small sideline of commercialism - so what. No other owners enter into the spirit of enjoyment and fun like him. Well done Mr Lucas and may your businesses go from success to even greater success.

Yep I'm in total agreement, it's just another way of promoting those establishments, and hoping for more customers. Most Thai gays wouldn't be seen dead in that parade in Bangkok. In fact most of the Thai gays that I know might, just might go to DJ's if accompanied by a friend, but would not walk down Soi 4 alone. Straights see all the queens dressed up to the nines and like to stereo type all gays in the same light.
Each to their own but no thank you.

November 9th, 2006, 21:41
In my opinion, each of these over-the-top parades sets back the gay movement by five years. People need to see that we are just like them -- not squealing Uncle Toms.

Good grief, someone who holds the same view as I do.

I always make a point of escaping from Bangkok on the day of the parade to avoid the over the top queens that give the gay community such as bad name.

You are right in saying that the parade is all about making money for the establishments and has little to do with 'pride'.

However you only have to wander the streets in parts of Bangkok and Pattaya (particularly Pattaya) to see many farangs acting and dressing in the 'over the top' mode that has now sadly become the stereotypical gay.

Just why does it appear that these cities bring out the most feminine of gays who appear to feel that it is their mission in life to make Thai citizens cringe at their antics?

November 9th, 2006, 22:35
Seriously...it's the equivalent of staging a "Black Pride" parade and filling it with Uncle Tom, Little Black Sambo, and shuckin' and jivin' pimps eating watermelon and friiiiiiiied chicken'.

At Pride in the Park I was impressed at just how little went into a promotional stand. A cheap table, a few balloons, and some colored paper. One set up some empty coke bottles on the ground as a ring toss. The biggest expense must have been the fem Thai boys that walked around posing for photos. I should have done some investigative reporting and asked how much they were being paid.

I don't mean to attack the gay owned farang business and making money is the Thai way, but don't feed me the Pride bullshit and bringing the community together with everyone singing the coke song.
