Given that it has been 500 baht for some time now, and that it doesn't start until (I think) February, and it will then be included in the ticket price, I think the assertion "they didn't waste much time" is somewhat unrealistic

Well, that's a given, from someone who writes his 700 baht expense off to a business.

I'll never forget the colleage next to me that thought the company should pay for his departure tax on his personal travel, as well.

Lesson 1. Don't believe everything you read on web sites.

Lesson 2. This has been on the cards for, to my knowledge, at least 18 months and was only waiting for the opening of the new airport for implementation. The new airport authorities then decided that it would not come into effect until February next year, to allow time for the new airport operations to bed down.

Yup. If it costs you time over your stay then it is more fines and maybe JAIL.

The increase in departure tax was annnounced by the tourism authority back in June 2005 it has been delayed until the New Year 2007 to allow the new airport systems time to bed-in.

From what I've read on some travel forums, when the departure tax is raised it will be incorporated into the ticket price as it is in many other countries, so it appears that one will no longer have to pay the tax separately at a booth.

Confirmed this today 500 baht Passenger Service Tax until Feb 1st then 700 baht should be in ticket at that time.
