Not just China, dear.

The US did the same and even did it a few days ago before the Chinese!. Deep down inside the White House some people must be very happy that the military has taken over Taksin. While these some people are telling the world they would withdraw military aid to Thailand but are at the same time hoping to sell more weapons to Thailand. Politicians are known to have 2 or more faces.

Is that a "congratulations" look on Boyce's face?

Another country weighs in against what happened on September 19. So far, the only "congratulations" I've seen is from China (and Cedric).

Coup is a set back for country and democracy : Singapore

Singapore--Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said Friday that the power seizure on 19 September was "a setback for Thailand" and its democracy.

He said Thailand lacks firmly established democratic institutions and a tradition of civilian rule.

Instead of waiting for the verdict of voters, which would come with the scheduled election for November, he said, the military decided to remove Thaksin through a coup.

"This is a setback for Thailand, which has been trying to establish a democratic system after a long series of seventeen coups since 1932," he said in his keynote speech to a group of journalists from Asia and Europe, in which he was explaining the political systems in Asia.

He pointed out while many Westerners and some Asians believe that a Western style liberal democracy is the standard and best way to achieve a good government. "But it is a magic formula for success," he said adding that in Asia, Western democracy has not always delivered stable, legitimate and effective government.

Apart from the reference on Thailand's democratic development, he added other reasons including the lack of long history of shared nations and populations which vote on racial or religious lines.

His comment came after Singapore was the first Asean country to send a congratulatory letter to Prime Minister Surayuth Julanont, who was appointed the Thai new leader over the weekend.

During the coffee break, he told The Nation that he has met with Surayut some time ago and expressed the confidence that he would live up to the responsibility he was tasked.

Asked if the two government need to talk to one another on the Shin-Temasak fallout, Lee said Singapore government is a friend and wants to be friend with the new Thai government. And he think vice-versa.
