Undoubtedly no one will be rushing off to Vancouver to see the 2006 festival, but I thought that if you are interested in Asian films (and especially Thai films) you might want to put these three titles in your memory bank, perhaps to see at a later date. I remember seeing 'Ong Bak' in Bangkok in 2003, but only in 2005 did that film make it to Vancouver ... and in fact was a reasonably decent hit there.

The same may hold true for these 3 films being shown at the festival, certainly for one of them ('Syndromes and a Century') which has received quite a lot of acclaim

The short blurb of a review below (of the film above) was written by Rick Groen, film critic for the Globe & Mail. He is normally quite stingy with his stars (max is 4 I believe), so 3 and a half stars from him is a pretty impressive compliment.

Weerasethakul is steadily building up an art-house fan base for his dream-like, elegant films. This one, ostensibly following hospital life, tells tales of unrequited love, rare orchids, a singing dentist and a wily Buddhist monk intent on obtaining pills for his whole monastery. But plot is secondary to mood and tempo here, and the tone shifts when the action moves from a country hospital to a high-tech modern facility -- many scenes are simply repeated with subtle changes. The less you try to pin it down, the more likely you are to be enraptured. F.M. (Oct. 2, 9:15 p.m., and Oct. 3, 2:30 p.m.; both at Granville 7)

Who knows, maybe this post will prod you to look out for these three Thai films.

Cheers ...
