Thai generals ban go-go dancers

Thailand's coup leaders have banned go-go dancers from performing for troops on the streets of Bangkok, fearing soldiers may be distracted.

A troupe of scantily-clad women danced for soldiers near the Royal Plaza on Monday, as part of entertainments paid for by a local radio station.

But the coup's leaders - who had earlier told soldiers to keep smiling - have now banned all dancing near tanks.

"We have to maintain the seriousness of the coup," a military spokesman said.

The bloodless coup, which ousted former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, has been broadly welcomed in Bangkok, where Mr Thaksin was increasingly unpopular.

Once initial tensions subsided, residents and tourists gathered in front of troops to have their photos taken. Others took flowers and food to show their backing for the soldiers.

But the coup's leaders said Monday's go-go dancers - who appeared in skimpy camouflaged tops and pants - were the final straw.

"I don't know what the organiser's intention was but this should be the first and last of this type of dance performance. It's totally inappropriate," said coup spokesman Lt Gen Palangoon Klaharn.

As everyone now knows I played a leading role in this coup so with a nod and a wink to an admiring general we were frog-marched off to his private quarters were I continued to perform while Edith was put in a darkened room, took an aspirin given a cool cloth and told to rest.

You will be happy to know I am now Minister Elect for Kulture & Go Go Bars so there will be no change in policy in that area..boys will still be required to wear briefs, look bored and shuffle quietly around the stage.

BANGKOK, Thailand - Thailand's military coup leaders may be losing their sense of humor. Five days after instructing soldiers to keep smiling, the ruling council decided Wednesday that there is a limit to how much fun soldiers should have.

They ruled that sexy dancers were forbidden near tanks and tourists were no longer permitted to handle weapons when posing for photographs with troops still deployed in Bangkok.

The military toppled Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra in a bloodless coup Sept. 19. As soon as the danger of violence subsided the troops mingled freely with residents and foreigners and their tanks became an instant tourist attraction. Hundreds had photos snapped of themselves posing with the soldiers.

At first the ruling generals turned a blind eye when a troupe of go-go dancers with naked midriffs and sexy camouflaged pants performed in front of the tanks to be followed the next day by dancers in traditional attire.

But on Wednesday, Deputy Supreme Commander Gen. Boonsang Niempradit said the go-go dancing was "not appropriate."

"We have to maintain the seriousness of the coup," said Lt. Gen. Palangoon Klaharn, a military spokesman. "The police should ensure that provocative performances are kept at a distance from soldiers while they are on duty."

Well I have it on good authority that orders have been given that both Edith and Pearl are to be SHOT ON SIGHT the moment they are seen back on the streets of Bangkok. After their last escapade, the military authorities quite rightly decided that enough was enough! Not only did their dancing cause all the military's privates to go limp, their dancing also frightened old people and upset children. Some apparently are STILL having nightmares!

And by the way, contrary to popular opinion the coup was not bloodless.
