It seems as though w-a-a-y too many threads are being derailed by cat-calling and sideswiping comments that have nothing to do with the original topic. So often it degenerates into series of posts that go something like this:

"How about THIS unrelated ranting??"
"You're SO full of #@&&"
"Well, you're a $#&%*&"
"Am not"
"Are too"

This is something I haven't ever run across in a posting, so I humbly offer a suggestion... There's a small button at the bottom of every post. It says "PM." If you truly feel compelled to share something with the person you disagree with, share it with them and have some compassion for the other members who don't need to read it.

Yes, I know the trolls won't understand this, but for those of you with some decency left... please consider the suggestion?

Just an idea.

Trolls - decency? I don't think so.

"There's a small button at the bottom of every post. It says.." IGNORE and I find it improves my enjoyment of the board. Every now and then I cancel the names on it but I find I replace them quite quickly. There seems to be no cure for twitism.

...but I was hoping to appeal to those suffering from the momentary lapse of reason, and not the grossly unbalanced.

I probably should've been a little more specific!

You would be surprised by the number of Thai guys who read this site but don't post. Many read it to see what we think of them and their country and others read it because they like our topics.

I ask them why they don't post and they tell me they only read here.

I wonder why they don't post?

Ever watch a Thai boy try to type in English? It can be painfully slow.

However, more power to them because there is no way can I type in Thai.

Well, actually no.

If truth be known I've always prided myself on being a somewhat suave, debonair and well-read sack of shit. :geek:

It's my sincere hope there aren't many Thai reading this blog. Satire, sarcasm and teasing can be confused all too often with the vicious rantings and ravings that inspired this thread to begin with.

I'd be pleased to share a meal with most who post here regularly, but I'd be worried about keeping my hands and feet clear of the mouths of SOME of the trolls, VIs and alleged military officers who get such jollies mucking the place up!

Anyway, it was just a pipe dream to begin with... mai pen rai

Anyway, it was just a pipe dream to begin withIndeed it was. At least you're fcaing up to reality, as the Buddha enjoins us to do

This is a very pertinent argument. It as come to my attention that there are in fact a number of people who would love to post here, and join in the chat, but don't, because they feel their English would be horribly ridiculed. While I know quite often it is no more than an inoffensive knee jerk reaction from the small minority of burnt out school mams amongst us, I still feel is disagreeable.

We are all gay and have an interest in Thailand, and no matter how bad our English might be, we should all be able to freely try and express ourselves without fear of ridicule. Heavens alive, a lot of us might have had to live with ridicule just because we are gay, why turn on each other and display the same level of discrimination.

This is a sad state of affairs, not least because we are missing out on some engaging and charming characters with valuable input. And now I must return to some serious American bashing.

At least you are HONEST about your shameless BIGOTRY.

We are all gayWrong again, I'm afraid Cedric. There's at least one poster here (who is obviously a voyeur), but claims to be straight and have children. You'll see him posting occasionally about the evils of paedophilia (his sole obsession)

Guys... Just how dumb do you think the people of Thailand are? Do we truly think they are fools when it comes to navigating the internet?

All of the Thai guys I know can communicate in 2 languages. I can only stumble through English...

September 29th, 2006, 09:13
... the same principle applies to the Bangkok room on gay.com where I know you regularly pop in for a little uplifting conversation. How many Thai guys contribute to the general room there? Very, very, very few - but they're not averse to private messages. I don't think you can reasonably infer anything from the fact that some Thais read this Forum but rarely contribute. The same is true of, say, soc.culture.thai over on Usenet

Also in the gay.com chat room the guys are insulted on their english. Difference is here they would be dogged non-stop. Day in and day out.

September 29th, 2006, 09:50
I don't think they would be dogged, as you say, if they announced they are Thai and struggling with English.
Might be dogged for the CONTENT, but not the style. Bring them on!

September 29th, 2006, 09:52
I know that I personally limit my language ridicule to native English speakers.

So it's true, you are a racist "sack of shit" after all (thank-you Aunty) you are the kind of poster we should be actively discriminating against.

I am scary to post I can see why.

I'm not surprised. Why should they post here, where they can expect to be ridiculed and\or ignored?
In the past anyone claiming, or hinting, to be Thai was roundly trounced, told they were lying, typical 'reasoning' being: their English is too good (Can only be a Farang! Thai...impossible!) or they are a farang faking bad English.

I have a highly intelligent, witty, charming and kind Thai friend who is hearing impaired. He wears a hearing aid, can sign, read lips & type in several languages--And he can speak Thai and English and (at least, a little) French and German--Although understanding takes time and attention. Rather than give that attention, many just write him off or treat him like a pet--Or worse; like he's of low mentality. He feels the rejection (Can't help but, when some bastard comes on to him, then turns away when he speaks.) but shrugs it off: 'Those (kind of) people aren't worth knowing anyway.'
So true--And would apply to the situation to which you are refering, Bucky.

September 29th, 2006, 18:40
... at the wickedness and inhumanity of some people, together with massed pursing of the lips, what is the change people believe can be made? If you want a moderated Forum you have only to go over to the Grand Ayatollah's playground (and how many Thais are posting there?)

Mr Bao Bao . . . I don't ever remember a topic degenerating to the exaggerated point to which you refer above.

Bickering, the rare actual down-and-down name-calling (this is true ... it is very rare that the phrase "fuck-head" has been bandied about. " ... You're a rascist ... " is (unhappily) a favourite one here, but usually the same few folks are the ones who use that term. They use it as often as they take a drink of water, thus diluting it's use to insignificance), though lots of topic-wandering is the norm for this Board.

Sawatdee is ~ and always has been, from the get-go ~ fairly anarchic and chaotic. It is part of it's charm, part of it's deeply ingrained and natural sense of 'sanook' ... and certainly part of it's exasperation at times.

If you want it clean, "nice", and free of weirdness, try the Baht Stop ( 'The Board That Hedda Built' http://www.baht-stop.com/ ) and feel the authoritarian heaviness of his pronostication.
Try GayThailand Message Board ( http://www.gaythailand.com ), a Forum who's claim to fame is that either the Admin (GayThailand) or the Moderator (GayButton et al) has started 26 of the 30 topics on the first page (I just counted), and I guarantee the pages before that reflect pretty much the same ratio.
This is not a putdown of those Boards. They are what they were advertised they would be: heavily moderated, polite, and "nice".

But you can't dispute the "numbers" over time: with all it's faults & imperfections, Sawatdee is the most popular message board about gay Thailand by a very long cannon shot.

One gets what they want from Sawatdee. You can skip over posts from folks you are sure will piss you off. You can use the 'Ignore' button liberally (but like our friend TeePee/Wowpow you'll find yourself regularly un-ignoring them " ... just to take a peek .. ".

You can't change the "nature" of a Board unless you are willing to accept participating on one where the moderator jumps in with abandon and "shapes" the topics to reflect a general philosophy.
The Admin and the Moderator (bless their hearts) have consciously chosen not to go that route (and have been highly criticized for that stance at times) and seem quite content to let the Members define the overall mood of the Board. That position is not perfect ... but then neither are the Members (except perhaps Edith, Miss Pearl, & myself): so that's the Board everyone gets, and deserves.

Cheers ...

The rest I agree with, but perhaps Mr Smiley has stopped making distinctions between use and abuse of certain terms, because he has been in happy residence for so long, but I have only ever heard the term "you are a racist" twice in 2 years of using this board. So I can only assume S.G.T is refreshingly free of them,at least in so far as we believe any-way.

Well I for one would really like to see more gay Thai men participate in this forum. I mean we all adore Thai men, that's why we're here right? I can understand why they don't participate, many of the reasons have been outlined above. And I don't have any easy answers for them as to how to handle the trolls that live under Sawatdee Gay Thailand's bridge, waiting to accost innocent travelers as they pass by. But I guess the best thing to do is the only thing that can be done, ignore them. Most trolls are ting tong nut-jobs and don't deserve so much as the time of the day.

Most of the men who participate in this forum would welcome any and all Thai contributors.

Those who play bridge, under the bridge, are preying (sic) to be accosted!
Warning: Don't play bridge without a rubber!

As per usual and as the Colonel also correctly pointed out to you earlier, wrong again.

Many foreigners love Thailand not only for the commercialism of the sex industry, but because
they prefer smooth (not so masculine looking) asians.
Some of us asian lovers (and in my opinion) proportionally more than those that aren't into asians
have come from marriages or other serious relationships with women.
Could there be any connection with the move from women to men without overtly masculine features?

And as our dear Colonel (truly one of my favorite racists) can tell you, your hearing / reading skills / memory
are rather lacking. I imagine that although American may not qualify as a specific race, your countless tiresome
comments have the same intent as racism or hate propoganda.

Surfcrest dear, After 497 posts of your own, and after reading thousands of other posts on this forum, I hope that you have noticed that to the left of each post is a panel showing the name of the Poster in BIG letters and underlined. Adding your name at the end of each post is therefore a trifle superfluous, although I understand that you are proud of your pearls.(No, not that one).

We were discussing Thread de-railing, insults and assorted flaming weren't we?

As for your favourite racist.......is it true that his favourite restaurant is Baan Rim Pa?
