View Full Version : What to do in Bangkok during the day?

September 11th, 2006, 22:11
I have only been to Bangkok once and loved the night life. I got a little bored during the day however. What is there to do after you have visited the Grand Palace and all of the temples?
Thanks for your help and advice.

Go shopping at Siam Paragon and have a look at the boys working there. Or better still go to the toilets at Silom Complex and cruise.

1. Go to Siam Paragon centre - well worth a look for shopping.
2. Take one of the many half or whole day tours:-

Royal Barge museum
River tour
Ayuthaya - go by minibus and return on the river (includes lunch).
Floating market
Crocodile farm
etc etc etc - there are many of them

3. Also worth visiting is Dusit Zoo in the city (near to Chitralada Palace). Taxi-meter from Silom/Suriwongse is about 80 Baht. Tip - hire a bicycle after you pay the entry fee - the place is large and well spaced out and is a hell of a trek if you try to see everything on foot plus it also gives you flexibility to fit in the various displays/feeding times etc. You could spend all day there and probbly not see everything!

Apart from the obvious shopping opportunities that Bangkok presents to a visitor why not take a look at the real Thailand and see how real Thais survive here.

Put the sex out of your mind for a few hours, hire yourself a guide from one of the many hotel/travel agencies ( maybe 1500Baht for the day) and ask him/her to take you off the tourist track. Stack up on some sweets, pencils and small inexpensive cosmetic items then go meet the REAL people. Chat to them about their lives ( you have an interpreter), laugh with the kids and give them some sweets and pencils, take some photos of the people you meet and they will love you for it. Wander round the markets that the Thais shop for their food and clothes, smile and you will amazed at the real warm response you get.

I am always amazed that tourists visiting here rarely venture away from the main tourist spots and then go home thinking they have see the real Thailand.

The cinemas in Thailand are great, cheap and comfortable. 100 Baht for ordinary but comfortable seats, and 500 Baht in VIP cinemas with lashings of personal space, reclining/massage chairs.

First run movies, and Art House movies too, see House Cinema in RCA.

Thonburi Khlong boat tour or just jump on the commuter boats

Take boat to Ko Kret

Malls and more Malls, not just MBK

Aquarium at Paragon

Chatuchak Market, huge and hot

Picknick at Lumpini or Chatuchak park

Swim at one of the gay saunas

Read the free newspapers at the Cafe Society on Silom and watch boys

Dream World

Jim Thompson House, for the tour or just lunch

Massage, can't swing a dead cat with out hitting some massage place in BKK

The saunas do a good early evening business with those getting off work and school.

note about the bathrooms at Silom Complex: CFS did a post on this place and now every farnag and their mother are lined up at the urnals and in the stalls. I had to use the toilet and could not find a seat yesteday. Unless the farangs are hooking up with each other, there's no room for anyone else.

Thanks for all the good ideas. Just what I was hoping for when I posted my inquiry! I really appreciate the information provided on this board, especially when the topic doesn't get hijacked!
Thanks again,
Hobie.
