Hong Kong (dpa) A 75-year-old woman believed to be Hong Kong's oldest prostitute Monday promised to retire from her profession after being caught selling sex for less than 3 US dollars a time.
Wu Wei-geen, whose convictions date back to 1982, was arrested in the city's red light Shamshuipo district in March leaving a room with a 60-year-old male client.
She told police she decided to carry on selling herself for sex because she could not make ends meet on her social welfare payments and charged clients 20 Hong Kong dollars (2.57 US dollars).
Wu, who was just 51 at the time of her last prostitution conviction, pleaded guilty to soliciting for an immoral purpose at an earlier hearing in the city's Kwun Tong magistrates court.
At Monday's sentencing, she was put on a good behaviour bond for one year, which involves promising not to reoffend and released on bail of 1,000 Hong Kong dollars (128 US dollars).
The magistrate said he decided to spare her a jail term because of her age, her financial situation and the fact that she had pleaded guilty to the offence.
Wu told the court she knew her actions were wrong and said she would in future collect waste cardboard for recycling, a popular way for Hong Kong's impoverished elderly to make extra cash.
