For a newbee like me can you let me know the etiquette of massage?

1) do you ask about top/Btm preference up front?
2) if they are hung ?
3) what they are willing to do?

I have always found myself (my limited experience) paired with whoever was available

Where to start.....

Walking into a massage parlor you've never visited before is the most challenging because you don't know the staff. This being the case you can either talk to the manager/mamasan and describe in detail what your preferences are - or just select a boy who looks good to you and provide this information to him once you're alone in the massage booth. Personally I just go with the flow and let things evolve naturally. I find that little bit of mystery to be extremely erotic. To each his own.

Massage boys are no different than bar boys when it comes to delivering their services. If you return to the same parlor often and get to know the staff you can then maneuver a bit more towards a boy who is the perfect match for you.

All massage boys understand that a "happy ending" is part of the service. If you prefer having oral and/or anal sex as part of the service this is considered an "extra" service and it would be customary to tip a bit more for this. Some boys will tell you this up front - and some will give you the traditional "Up2U".

Most boys will be happy with a 500 baht tip for a standard "happy ending". If you also give or receive a blowjob you might want to tip a bit more. If you have intercourse (top or bottom) I always tipped between 1,000 and 1,500 - the same as I used to tip for short time sex with bar boys. I know some farang who tip more and some who tip less - but this is just intended to give you a rough idea.

Most parlors allow their staff to be taken off for a 500 baht off fee if you ever have the interest.

Here in BKK my exp is a little different. In fact the recently new started crop of such shops round Sapan kwai show all you ask for in their pix of the guys on offer- be aware that 99% of them are from the real Laos or Cambodia/Burma. Some not speaking any Thai at all. Besides the usual length/weight they also show position (>80% claim to be chay tae= real men) and a nr as 52/4/6=condom size (thickness). It also shows MIN tip (mostly from 7/800 up) and yes, confirm, I´ve done it nearly a dozen times now, this includes EVERything, not just a simply HJ. Up to the extent that guys even start to apologize they do not have the change from a grey note.........As if I would even have expected that. Quite a few of those guys still fairly new on the job are not used to whitey´s-yet. In 1 shop the guys available right them were shown life-subdivided into T-only or ´versa´. None, repeat none of these shops even offer foot-msg-some not even classic (no oil) Thai msg. The standard order is oil msg (or aroma=with a scent). You may or may not agree with what I'm about to say - but I have to say it anyway:

When a Thai is handed a tip (for any service) they usually (not always) respond in very distinguishable ways if you know what to look for:

- They will almost always thank you regardless if they're happy with the tip amount or not. (conflict avoidance)
- If you're a stranger to them they will almost always "wai" when thanking you. (more formal)
- If they know you they may or may not include a "wai" when thanking you. (less formal)
- If they look directly into your eyes when thanking you (with or without a "wai) they are most likely pleased with the tip amount.
- If they look down at the ground when they thank you (with or without a "wai) they are possibly not pleased with the tip amount.

These behavior patterns are inherent in all Thai culture and not isolated to the massage business. Knowing this little bit about Thai "body language" may be very helpful.

I certainly will not find myself paired with whoever is available. In many cases, I don't find (either present or on pictures) anyone who is my type and I will walk out and go elsewhere (the gay massages are mostly in clusters).

Nonsense. THOse tipical real m2m shops do not offer any foot-msg. Some do not even offer normal Thai (only oil etc-where yo have to get out of clothes anyway). That is again for BKK-on my last day now, have to pack for going Swampy and been to around 10 of such in this period-5 new ones for me, all in Sapan kwai.
Plus that these shops tend to be more quiet-often you will not seen anyone else. The guys are hidden too-sometimes they organise a quick line-up for choosing.
Yes-in this touristy area far away from Silom where I stay it also brims with normal msg shops, most shown price for feet or Thai is 150/250 for 30/60 mins-tipping is completely optional and if you give a green note its often a big surprise for them. Last time after a long day of tedious walking I hit a fairly young guy-masked etc, who to my utter surprise told me he got his training right after 18 at Wat Po (frankly-this is often seen as a plus, for me rather reverse) and @ 24 now had done that job-hiatus in covid times, since then. NOte: you cannot choose, it goes by rotation in these shops. Most workers tend to be those Isany ladies of at least 40 yrs-of some I suspect having had a former career around Sukhumvit or Silom. All shops will have at least 1 receptionist good in /en/ or maybe even JPNese for info/explaining and service/paying. IN tipical touristy areas it seems more or less the norm to tip normal msg-in Thai areas this is not done nor needed. Cheapest around here is on a mat on the streets near the 1000s of homeless for 100 bt/hr-Thai only. Of course without shower etc. Cheapest in normal shop for Thai I noted was 150 bt/hr in Happyland/Bangkapi by elderly ladies-who can still be very strong in their hands.
So back to your Q; even a 10% tip is generous for normal/no extra. PRIME-in Sliom soi 6, famous mostly among ASEANs for no extra hanky-panky but right behind the 6-7 such shops in the dogleg-stated MIN tip there is 100 bt-it is always praised as giving excellent service by very well-trained staff-this is quite high.
But again: BKK and Pattaya in many respects seem to be worlds apart.

To be honest I over tip a bit at massage parlors - and usually tip 100 baht for a foot massage. I think a 40 baht tip would be appreciated and is probably closer to the average.
