View Full Version : New tourist tax proposal set to be introduced in April after all

Save your satang all you sex tourists; the government has confirmed that the proposed 300 baht tax on international tourists will start in April after all. It seems that part of it will be an insurance levy for all those of you hospitalised with a dose of the clap who were previously tempted to do a runner before paying the bill. Stand by for Dodgems or one of the other Bookburners to start a different thread on the same topic

It’s not even the cost of a drink in a Bangkok Gogo bar.
Nobody in their right mind is going to bother hitting their keyboard over it.
Ah...the Pattaya heat must be getting to me!

If I could, If it was within.my power right now I'd pay 30000 baht tourist tax for four weeks of pre covid Pattaya.

I suspect my vat, hotel taxes and taxes on beer get to something in the same ballpark as Arsenal's 30,000.

Although, I suspect the casual service workers who sometimes visit my room might not be vat registered.

. . . Although, I suspect the casual service workers who sometimes visit my room might not be vat registered.

I’m glad you brought that up goji, because it reminds me of what turned out to be a rather unfathomable incident in my Bangkok apartment back in 2019 when my short-time visitor for the evening was about to leave. I asked him, casually mind you, not in the least bit confrontational, if he would mind providing me with a VAT receipt so that I could make a VAT refund claim. I showed him a form similar to the one below as evidence in support of my request:

12109

Well, goodness me, up until then he had been very pleasant and er . . . what can I say, ah yes . . . very obliging. But in the blink of an eye he flew into a rage, ripped my form into shreds and, I’m guessing, said a few very unpleasant things in Thai. Then stormed off in what can only be described as a fury. Needless to say I never off’d him again. And to this day I really don’t understand why he became so unpleasant, do you? ;)

We're more interested to know were you claiming your entire trip as a deductible business expense !

Before you reply I should add .....you do not have to say anything unless you wish to do so, however anything you do say may be taken down and used as...... I'll not continue as what with you being an HRMC inspector Im sure you know the drill from here on :-)

PS when collecting your VAT receipts from the boys (as we all do of course) I trust you too just ask them to leave the figures section blank so you can fill it in yourself later when fiddling your expenses too ??? lol

Most boys think of themselves as bar boys, working boys, or some such similar polite phraseology. I don’t ever recall seeing a profile calling themselves an escort.

They do not regard themselves as “money boys “, even though they will “perform” for a tip. I agree that you sometimes see profiles which says “MB”, but it Is quite rare.

Being called a “money boy” to his face is considered a serious insult. Ask me how I know!

Perhaps this is what he thought you were saying?

I doubt a Thai boy would understand your joke, let alone the form you produced!

Sorry gerefan2, I thought I had made it clear that my whole post was a work of fiction with the addition of the emoji, the updated form date of 1 April 2018 and the whole tone of my post. Apologies for any confusion.

I don’t ever recall seeing a profile calling themselves an escort.I once encountered a young man working at Boys Bangkok in its final incarnation who described himself as a “sex worker”. His previous employer had been some UN do-gooder agency whose major influence on the young man’s life was the information that there’s more money in sex work than office work. He’s not the only pleasant encounter a UN agency has provided although the first one was not a paid meeting. I met him in that haunt of daytime pick ups in the 80s and early 90s, Dairy Queen in the Robinsons building on the corner of Silom & Rama 4 roads

I think you’ll find the Forum’s most persistent Cheap Charlie has already expounded on it at length when the proposal was first ventilated

Ha I don't know which was funnier there, JB's original post or Gerefan2 thinking it was a serious interaction :-) Ha the very idea of Jelly standing at the door of his hotel seeing out his boy de jour while asking for a VAT invoice for services rendered as the boy left - classic :-)

when chatting with a boy online. what is the proper way to ask if they are a money boy/escort?I find “So many money boys on here” the most effective throwaway comment. The most common response is “do you mind?”

I tend to word it in the reverse i.e " great that you can come and see me - and as Im assuming you're not a money boy that you're coming for fun not money - right ?" and then let THEM say no to that suggestion. Unfortauntely it's little odds most times as many "just for fun" boys end up coming out with the "yes Im here just for fun.....but maybe you can help me with my school / taxi / family / dead realative / new phone / rent / insert bullshit excuse of the day that they think will work best on you".

So maybe easier just to cut to the chase and just go straight to the assumption of them being a MB anyway and tell them you'll be giving them 1000 baht when done and then they can bugger off and leave you in peace so you can sleep / go out etc ......and if they're offended by the very idea of that they can always come and decline the money anyway ( as rarely does that happen of course - but yeah sometimes it does and that makes it even better!! )

If it's just a random guy you're chatting with, I don't see the harm in asking. It's not like they're going to be offended by it. If anything, most would probably take is as a compliment and think it's funny, because that means you think they're cute enough to actually pay money for.

I always just asked. Not if they were a money boy or not, but I asked, "What are you looking for? Friend? Boyfriend? Fun? Fun with money? Or what?".

Always worked fine.

I've never used the apps in Thailand. Apps there are for wimps, the infirm, cheap Charlie's and the bewhiskered drunks.

However in China I simply ask 'are you a money boy?'. It saves a lot of time.

I never had this problem. Some write (in English or Thai) in their profile that they are money boys. Others bring it up during chat*. If there is any doubt, I ask "what are you looking for?". If a boy appears on my door without bringing up the issue of money, I assume he comes for fun. That works even in Pattaya.

*The earlier the better. In Myanmar and Cambodia very straightforward, whereas in Thailand you can waste some time chatting until the boy gets to the point. In 2013 I hooked up with a boy in DJ station, went to his room (much closer than my room at that time) and when we were both undressed to our underwear, he told me he is a moneyboy. He was not that good looking that I would pay, so I got dressed, said goodbye, and left.

According to my humble 10 years of experience in finding "fun for the night" in Pattaya it is always a money expectation especially if he is young and handsome (or far from it) and even in case yourself are a stunning doll too. Therefore I always ask not about whether he is money boy or not, but how much is the servise. Always works and saving a lot of time.

I've never used the apps in Thailand.

Not using apps is ruling out a lot of good opportunities.
Like the handsome young University student I met in Bangkok.
Or a lovely young Lao lad who only goes to bars when he's out partying with his young Asian friends.
The Thai town I'm currently visiting has never had any gay bars that I know of. However, on my previous visit, I had a Korean tourist, thanks to the apps.
Finally, even the boys working at some popular Jomtien bars can suddenly disappear part way through the night, as they go for an online date. Try booking one during bar hours and they are often available.

The BC (before cellphone) era might have been more fun, but we cannot uninvent the phone. The influence is there, whether we like it or not.

"Not using apps is ruling out a lot of good opportunities.,,,"

My preferred type, athletic straight boys aren't on the apps. And if I fancy a twinkie winkie there are loads of them in the bars. Dont need the apps.

My preferred type, athletic straight boys aren't on the apps. And if I fancy a twinkie winkie there are loads of them in the bars. Dont need the apps.

At present, the only place with a fair selection of twinks is Jomtien Complex, on the nights when it's open. Boyztown is closed most of the time and Sunee is dead. Even the Jomtien bars have fewer boys than are to be found on the apps.
There is a very limited selection in Bangkok Soi4 and they all also seem to be on the apps. I've yet to see anyone who could be described as a twink in a Bangkok gogo bar this season.
The other places I've visited in Thailand this year don't have gay bars, so apps are the best option.

I preferred the gogo bar scene of 10 or more years ago, but unfortunately that has mostly died out.
In many parts of Thailand, apps are now the only option with a reasonable probability of success.

Yes. In most places other than Pattaya the apps are the only option.
