COVID is going to get a lot worse in Thailand if the experience of Israel is any guide. The latest statistics show that roughly half of all new cases with the Delta variant in Israel had already been vaccinated, although it’s not clear whether they’d only had their first shot or both shots (reports from other countries suggest that it’s more likely to be those who’ve only had one shot of the vaccine; it doesn’t give as much protection).

The variant is also spreading among adolescents, few of whom in Israel have been vaccinated at all. Vaccinations for the old as we know have only just started in Thailand (and other countries such as New Zealand or Australia). A rocky few months lie ahead, with 2022 now being a more likely date for general international travel to SE Asia.

Songkran 2022 anyone? Few if any bar owners will survive that long.

Right on cue a story in today’s Bangkok Post about two women fully vaccinated with Sinovac becoming sick with the Delta variant - https://www.bangkokpost.com/thailand/general/2138731

Having gone completely against its medical advisors by allowing Songkran 2021 to go ahead, the PM and his government are now well and truly f**ked. Songkran 2025 might go ahead. I have no confidence at all that 2022 will.
