View Full Version : Thailand's Reopening Announcement

The Thai PM (the man of many words), announced this week that Thailand will be fully reopened to tourists within the next 120 days.

He stated on TV, as well as in the Bangkok Post article linked below, that he understands the risk associated with the reopening, but says that the economy just has to get running again. No one can argue with him there.

It will be great to see friends returning who have been MIA for over 16 months now, but I imagine the restrictions that accompany this reopening will dictate the tourist flow. As we've come to realize, the July 1st reopening in Phuket, which serves as the model for Thailand's reopening, is pretty much a flop due to the long list of restrictions tourists would be faced with, as well as the fact that the bars and entertainment venues won't be operational yet.

Let's hope the real reopening in the fourth quarter will go a bit smoother.

Wouldn't it be nice if vaccines were available? What a concept.

Good to hear, as I doubt Laos will be opening its borders before Thailand does. I'm quite confident Laos will follow Thailand's lead, so hopefully spring of 2022 or so I can finally get out there.

Good timing for a pandemic though, as I'd be more sour if one happened while I wasn't on a blacklist. heh.

Indeed. Having you post the news, followed by Dodger repeating it a day or two later, becomes tedious. Especially when the repetition is accompanied by the whole jaded expat schtick of running down the country you have chosen to inhabit.

Yes I want a vaccine but frankly I am not anxious for a “reopening”….. I have all I want without the reopening and that includes a good collection of boys. The bars are nothing like the good old days for me they are a repetitive bore and I certainly don’t miss the tourists….let them go elsewhere and leave my little paradise alone! BTW the best boys are not to be found on the apps or in the bars they are sourced by networking.

Thank you Jellybean.

The battle begins between TAT, the Health Ministry, and all the other players, about the rules for reopening Pattaya in the fourth quarter.

According to the Thaiger article linked below, they are already discussing options of limiting tourists travel to Bang Lamung and Sattahip districts for the first week or two, although the goal is to not impose any quarantine restrictions.

This will almost certainly get ugly before it gets pretty, but at least Pattaya businesses have a glimmering light at the end of the tunnel.

I’m waiting for Dodgems to pick up on the announcement that any Sandbox can be “cancelled” if there’s a surge in infections - https://thethaiger.com/news/national/ccsa-120-day-reopening-will-proceed-with-conditions

"The glimmer of a light at the end of a tunnel....." Yes; at least some of us will be pleased. Some.

The link includes a detailed timeline (which Dodgems will repost in a couple of days from now when he’s caught up with us (aka. The Cognoscenti)) - https://thethaiger.com/news/national/reopening-details-for-phuket-samui-and-beyond-laid-out

It makes for a wonderful fairytale; only time will tell us whether Red Riding Hood’s grandmother in the form of the Delta variant lies waiting or whether we’ll be giving her the royal salute.

According to a Bangkok Post article below, the CCSA states that tourists will not be permitted to visit any Province after the reopening unless 70% of the population in that respective Province has been vaccinated. I liked hearing this for several reasons. Now, if they can just stick to the plan.

I was on the phone with my daughter this morning who planned to make a return visit to Thailand in October. Her and her husband had to cancel their plans for October 2020, and are reading the news of Thailand's reopening from their home in the U.S.

I told her to avoid getting hung up on the "details" she see's in the newspapers right now, because they'll be changing with the wind, as they always do. She understands this situation is dynamic, and relies on the covid status during that period in time (fourth quarter). Pretty much the same as anywhere else in the world right now.

What the article says is that no province can take part in the 14-day semi-quarantine opening without 70% of its (adult) population having been vaccinated. It doesn’t mean tourists are unable to visit a province once they have sat out that 14-day period (with its PCR testing) - that’s for each governor to say (the current situation)

That was my understanding also. The headline, and Dodger's comments, were misleading.

Whatever you do, never allow yourself to be misled by anything you read in a Thai newspaper.
