US investment rises in Thailand, region

Singapore (dpa) - US direct investments rose throughout the Asia-Pacific region in 2005 with the exception of Singapore, which witnessed a 16 per cent plunge from 2004, a newspaper reported Monday.

The region saw US investments rise from $362.8 billion in 2004 to $376.8 billion in book value terms, according to US Commerce Department data published in The Business Times.

Australia and Japan emerged as the region's top investment destinations last year at $113.3 billion and $75.4 billion, respectively.

Singapore followed with the only decline in the region to 48 billion from 57 billion dollars the previous year.

The department attributed the drop to negative reinvested earnings of US holding companies, slashing the growth of US investments worldwide to 1 per cent last year, the slimmest gain since 1982.

Hong Kong was the fourth-largest recipient with 37.8 billion dollars, South Korea was fifth with 18.7 billion and China sixth with 16.8 billion.

Funnelled into Taiwan, in seventh place, were investments of 13.3 billion.

US holding companies accounted for the single largest chunk of US investments in the Asia-Pacific with 122.7 billion dollars, followed by manufacturing with 80.9 billion.

Malaysia, in eighth place, garnered 9.9 billion dollars, followed by 9.95 billion in Indonesia, 8.6 billion in Thailand, 8.46 billion in India and 6.64 billion in the Philippines.
