Upstairs Downstairs, the sequel, was first broadcast 10+ years ago. Its cast includes some of my favourite actors including Kelley Hawes (The Bodyguard, The Durrells). Another favourite actor - Adrian Scarborough - plays the butler who had been a conscientious objector in the First World War. As a new war approaches he encounters disapproval from those who felt that they all pulled together while he didn’t show “solidarity”. I wondered in passing whether in this at once both more sanctimonious and more selfish age similar disapproval might in future attach to those who avoided The Lockdown whether through sheer bloody mindedness (Dominic Cummings) or by escaping to somewhere abroad and less constrained.

Other actors well remembered include a couple of eventual queens - Eileen Atkins (Queen Mary) and Claire Foy (Queen Elizabeth) both subsequently of The Crown.

Ed Stoppard, son of the late 20th century’s finest English dramatist also features, as does Anthony Calf from New Tricks (DAC Strickland) playing Sir Anthony Eden.
