The Great Crash of Thailand's sex tourists and temple-lookers is more of a gory story of "How do I get outta here" and later, "How do I get back in". The gnashing of teeth palpable with the scent of drying sperm and the once-every-year post on Bare Backing has risen once more.

These ramblings show the distraught that has been suffered (economy like) in Hua Hin, my home town.
When you live in the same time and place for many years one falls into a certain amount of getting into what many would call drudgery, but I call a solitary habit. The old man works ~ he loves work, I run away from it ~ and I make a habit of grabbing an hour or so talking myself out loud about that asshole Trump (soon to be in the penitentiary). And I do that here, about 3-4 times an evening .... a lovely little night market just two blocks from our home.
A beer or so before dinner, I sit watching the world go by: Thais yapping away, yelling to one another, offering whatever. The worlds best noodle soup, the scrumptious khao-mun-guy. The cheap shirts flapping in the breeze.

No more. This little outdoor bar I sit down to was often full. Now the word "full" has run away to hide. The charming young girl who operates now half asleep in a hammock. I ask her every time I sit there about how things are going ... she always smiles whether things are wonderful like they used to be, or, shrugs her shoulders,"No Cutamer", inconsolable. I over-tip every time.
Some young Thai men had set up a cover and a bandstand, drums, guitars, excellent singing. They had obviously put up a decent amount of money to create this music hall. It was great, I enjoyed it immensely.
And then came the dreaded April. Great timing ... devastation.

Many stalls are closed now. The food court is still there, as is the best Pad Thai Goong in the province (I've been at them all).

Ahhhh the Hua Hin city beach. Kinda the same.
This beach is not given the best of hurrahs in my opinion. The water is clean, the waves are quite high sometimes, the rocks give a sense of old age ... thousands of years old. The sand here is glorious, as fine as white powder.

I go to the beach once a week, rain or sun. I take a book, a pillow, a tablet. I always go to the same umbrella stand, operated by the rather handsome Mr Bee. The food he feeds me is always delicious. I fall asleep ... he keeps watch out of his left eye, guarding my stuff. He calls to me from quite awhile down the beach entrance as if I would sit at any other kiosk. He tells me about his quite naughty kids, and of course I give him advice.

But, business is as you can see, less than perfect of course. I rather like this way, but that's selfish.
Usually the baht comes flying down like manna.

(PS: the above photos were taken in early July. I must say that things are somewhat better now in late August. So that makes me happy. The beach is busier than the night market .... it is still very low with customers. It will survive I'm certain.)

After reading that I felt calm and relaxed, not that I wasn't calm and relaxed before. Your story (Part 1 anyway) is a good reflection of the peace and serenity that fills our atmosphere over here - like it or not. Sometimes I feel like I'm moving in slow-motion...similar to smoking a doobie...or sitting in my grandmothers living room when I was young watching flowers grow.

I enjoy a bit of peace and quiet sometimes - good for the soul, but I can only entertain myself in small doses...where attempts at meditating, or being at one with nature when near the ocean, usually ends up with me heading to the market to peer at the sons of vegetable farmers waiting for one to bend over.

I prefer things the way they were, and will gladly swap all this peace and serenity for a bit of unrivaled mayhem when things get back to normal...if they ever do. My boyfriend's as quiet as a church mouse which doesn't help matters.

Even in normal times, there's certainly more peace & quiet in Hua Hin than Pattaya.
Hua Hin also has sufficient shops, restaurants and other facilities for my tastes.

All it's missing is a decent gay scene. Even the selection on Grindr is very limited. If just 10% of the boys working in Pattaya moved across to Hua Hin, it would become a very pleasant destination.

I won't name the city if you don't mind. It's a 'small' 3rd tier city of about four million people close to the Yangtze River. The huge Chinese megacities fill me with horror.

It's a nice and easy place to live. Safe with nothing remotely approaching a no go zone. You're drunk and you wanna go and sit in the park at 4.00am. Go ahead. In the unlikely event a group of Chinese youths approach you the worst you can expect is "Do you speak Chinese? and the offer of a cigarette.

How's working life there ?

I reckon working in China could be a very nice option, as long as you avoid the most badly polluted cities. Get paid a shed load of money for your expertise. Pay no tax on overseas investment income for the first 5 years. Lots of cute Asian lads & even if 0.01% are available, that's still easier than the UK. Relatively short flights to Thailand & similar time zone.
On the other hand, some companies work 6 days a week, so best to avoid them or negotiate back to 5.

I've stopped working & have no plans to change that. The one thing that might just change my mind would be a suitably lucrative contract in China.
