BANGKOK, Thailand (AP) - The Jelly Belly Candy Company, a U.S.-based jelly bean maker, announced Tuesday that it will build a factory in Thailand.

The privately-held Fairfield, California-based company said in a press release received here that the manufacturing facility in Rayong in eastern Thailand is meant to serve an expansion of the firm's international business outside North America. It currently distributes in 25 international markets, it said. The company has two existing factories employing 650 workers, in Fairfield, and in North Chicago, Illinois, that manufacture Jelly Belly jelly beans and 100 other types of candy, including chocolate-covered candies, gummies, jells and candy corn.

Construction on the Thai site is supposed to begin later this year, it said. It did not give the planned capacity or number of workers for the Thai location. "We see tremendous potential in the international markets, and this manufacturing facility will help us build business overseas," the press release quoted chairman of the board Herman G. Rowland, Sr. as saying. "The candy manufactured in the new Thailand plant will be earmarked for distribution in international markets." The company said the new factory will produce its jelly beans under U.S. management.
