Actually it's not the Internet that's absurd for this one, but those who don't understand how web sites work: "When browsing through the ‘Behavior’ section in Google Analytics, you’ll come across the term ‘pageviews’ a lot. And you might think that the more pageviews a page has, the better. But is that actually true? What’s a pageview exactly and can pageviews help you understand your site and audience better?"

Equally importantly, Internet pages are "viewed" by search engines all the time, and one of the things these engines check is whether the page has changed. They're not actually viewing the page in the way a human being views a page. Hence the longer the thread the greater the number of search engine views simply to see what's changed - a meaningless count
