Is there any Thai bank that offers ATMs where one can choose which bill denominations one wants? I would like to avoid getting only 1,000 baht bills when I withdraw 20,000 baht for my impending holiday in the LoS. (I also want to avoid several withdrawals, to avoid the 200 baht fee.)

Not that I know of, but I sometimes tap in 19,900 baht to get some smaller notes.

Take out the money then walk into the 7/11 or Family Mart next door and buy a packet of chewing gum. Instant change.

AFAIK ATMs can only dispense 40 notes at any one time

So you can have 40k In 1000s, 20k in 500s or just 4k in 100s (or a mix of denominations)
So you are much better off taking the 1000s when it comes to ATM fees, which by the way is now 220B

For me there is nothing more annoying than getting 20k in 500s and trying to find pockets to stash all those notes!

Just FYI: AEON charge is 150 baht... (use to be free!), but they have not so many branches. My bank (KrungThai) is now 250 baht, and I would not be surprised that other banks are also.
300 baht coming up?

Notes are easily broken by walking into a 7-Eleven and buying a 7 baht bottle of water with a 1000 baht note.
Also, coffee, lunch & anything else you buy will break large notes.

In the morning I move some 20, 50, 100 and 500 baht notes from the wallet to the room safe. By the time I head out to the bars in the evening, I have a good stash of notes from the safe & the wallet.

The bigger priority is avoiding the 200 baht ATM fee, which I do with a Thai bank account.

Not that I know of. Anyway, small bills can easily be obtained as change from 1000.

The problem is rather to minimize losses during exchange. The unprepared/ignorant can lose as much as 5% of their hard-earned money during exchange. I got my losses down to 0.5%.

I exchange cash or transfer money online to my Thai bank account.

If you have to use an ATM, find one that can dispense 30 kTHB, e.g.

Krungsri (yellow ATMs) allows withdrawal of 30,000 Baht, 180 Baht fee. (info from 2014)
