If a Thai boy is shy about telling you what his nickname means, he might have a good reason. Thai children are officially named by a Buddhist monk when they are at least 30 days old. In the meantime, their parents give them a nickname - and it usually sticks.

The Thais are a superstitious race. To protect their children from the envious attention of demons, Thai parents tend to choose nicknames that are unremarkable or downright unflattering. A pencil-thin Thai boy could live his whole life being called fatty (Uan).

Sat chatting with a very handsome young man at a table-for-two at Connect Guesthouse boy-watching bar one evening in Patong. He eventually mentioned that his (nick) name was 'Dollar'' and ... I from Hat Yai ... ". On the same trip I also met 'Money' from Surat Thani.

With the former I feigned a quick bout of the runs and (hastily) excused myself. With the latter, I went with the flow ... :bounce:

I'm known as Duk as the Thais have a difficult time pronouncing a hard "G" at the end of a word. On my first couple of trips I tried hard to get them to say Doug but as I became more and more Thailandized -ooo that's a nice word to say - I became very content with my nic.

Funny that you say that, because my experience is that Thai guys can pronounce Dutch words with a hard "G sound" like "Scheveningen" or "Acht" without problems while that is impossible for native English speaking persons.

Well I know that there are certain posters on this board who, when in Thaland, demand to be called Jesus Christ or God, becuase that is who they think they are. And if they don't get their way they pack a shitty.

I know a couple farang called Lay and a, if I can remember it correctly; one called Man Gawn Pom See Torng (Golden Haired Dragon) when his bf is angry with him.

Don't know a farang called God but knew a boy called that but, mien Godt, pronounced the German way. One day he called me Mrs. God. Does that count?

Their favorite nickname for farang is Ettienne. Pronounced ATM.

And must not forget Boy Ting-tong.

I don't mean to be rude or offensive in anyway but when I stayed at the Malaysia Hotel there was a front desk clerk who was called Pornpimple. I must admit I thought it funny because of the juxtaposition of two words that in the english language are not likely ever to be found next to each other.

My BF's frinds who bacame my friends as well called me:

Either I liked them all too much or THEY liked me too much but it fit and it stuck. It's very Isaan.

I too was wondering about the meaning of that term. Mac or mak (often spelled mahk in "thaienglish") means much. Its the "lie" (likely thaienglish "lai") that has me puzzled. Depending on the inflection, "lai" could mean many or several (which, combined with mahk makes me politely ask if the person is bit on the large side?), or it could mean "to chase", "to flow", "shoulder", or "striped." Mahk lai isn't in my thai idiom dictionary so that's the best I can do.

Lie is clearly a pronunciation of Like with either the K absent or barely pronounced. I lie why means I Like Wine.

My all time favorite thai nick was 'wow'...a very fitting one.

And I am Dawit, like many other posters on this board and 1/3 of all north american males, and although it never stuck, have been refered to as same sana claus

The reason "mak lai" isn't in your dictionary is because it is Lao, not Thai.

BG, if it's lao, can you advise of the meaning? I'm just curious (I presume there's a lao boy or two in about every bar and perhaps they would know).

In Lao/Isan dialect:

mak=to like (same as "chawp" in Thai)
lai=very much (same as "maak" in Thai)

I had a student named Boom.

Some times when calling on him to answer a question I would shout out BOOM!!!! Like something was exploding, it usually got the classes attention and was kind of fun.
