I went to Hat Yai with my B/F last month and thought some of you could be interested in an update.
We left Bangkok on an Air Asia flight - one hour late, but this seems to be quite frequent with this company. We staid in the Florida Hotel which is a 15 minute walk from the town center but right in the south of town where gay bars are located. Most hotels in Hat Yai are very good value, and Florida is one of them ; for 550 THB you have a spotless room with a view and all the basic amenities. This hotel has massage room and a coffee shop with girls, and is quiet at night.
After seeing that Banana Pub was definitely closed, we entered Buddy Pub on Thanon Sriphunawat (this bar is more or less facing Hat Yai Meridian Hotel which is easy to spot on the map that you will get free from the Tourist Office). Like most Hat Yai bars, Buddy Pub claims to be a gogo bar but is mostly a host bar where the boys are fully dressed and sit in front of the customers (like in My Way or in Saphan Khway bars). They will have a short gogo show only if there are enough customers. Sorry about this but the boys in Buddy Bar were absolutely NOT to my taste : on the older side, white-skinned and butcher-type.
The next bar was much better : it is called G-Men Pub and is about 200 meters far from Buddy along Thai Arkan Road (south of Sriphunawat). They have a very nice atmosphere and many types of boys. We finished offing two of them (a 19 y/o Udon Thani guy and a 22 y/o local boy) for a great time in the local disco (Sutus Disco as they call it). Nothing more as my B/F is not into group sex. In Hat Yai the tip is included in the "off'" fee (1000 THB for one boy) but you can of course give more. G-Men provides massage too.
We discovered another bar almost next door to G-Men : T.Tong karaoke was much quieter with only three boys but I guess it should be more lively on Friday and Saturday. Going further on Thai Arkan and turning on your right after the small bridge, you enter a sleazy district with markets, stray dogs and many girlie bars ; among them on Channiwate soi 2 there is a boy bar called Studio 54 ; I entered only to see a group of boys and girls partying and left, but I remember going there three years ago and it was a quite lively host bar.
Besides boy bars, Hat Yai is a pleasant place to stay, mainly for shopping and eating.
We then went to Songkhla which is the capital city of the province but much smaller than Hat Yai. No gay place at all but a great beach with hardly a farang to be seen. Songkhla has a lot of students so there is a lot of eye candy along the beach ; in the evening my B/F went back alone and met many local places where thai drink beer and listen to music : he said me that a farang could probably find a boy there but I could not check and we left the day after.
All in all, the south is a pleasant place to go and I think that going there without bringing my own boy, I would not have staid alone ... With some luck and more time, I think I could even have found a local boy, one of these dark-skinned wide-smiling southern boys who for me are probably the cutest in Thailand.

Having asked for - and received - advice from members here, I visited Hat Yai last year. I completely agree with the comments above and found the surprisingly lively gay scene a pleasant change from Bangkok, Pattaya, etc.
