Village People moment.

I’m old enough to remember that when the Village People malarkey first came to the attention of the UK, local TV and radio stations were booking clergymen to tell the viewers and listeners about the good work VP were doing in publicising the YMCA.

The goodwill from Churches quickly gave way to open hostility as the real situation became known.

In a similar vein, the US Navy was apparently delighted when Village People asked permission to film the video for their song In the navy on board a US warship. Oblivious, it seems, to VP's trademark double entendres, the admirals thought that the video would be an excellent recruiting tool ("We want you, we want you, we want you as a new recruit!)

By the way, if you thought that In the navy made life on a US warship look somewhat camp, there's another video that makes the same point - but even more so! - about the Russian fleet. Admirers of virile young matelots will love this one - and positively swoon, in all probability, for the charismatic cabin boy with the winning smile who certainly seems popular with his shipmates and who gets a solo spot from 4'30" onwards.
