It wouldn't take much to make it pleasant -- some nice thick cushions, battery operated fans, brollies to cover you from the sun, and some sexy Khmer lads serving cold beer and sandwiches :) Actually it looks like it could be fun for an hour or so...

This kind of local transportation is also popular within many parts in Southern Thailand. Kids or farmers go to come from school or markets or work. It's fun to use, indeed often very fast, but you have to jump off several times before crossing major roads or with everybody on guite "mau" (common) you'll give a damm.
Especially around the rubber plantations there are often no alternatives.
