And ten my pointy thing (cursor?) decides to jiggle about for no known reasonl

Switch to LINUX. :)

Seriously, just allow Windows to install the updates, and it's fine. They release them for a reason, and not just for shits and giggles.

No idea about your mouse. Invest $5 and maybe buy another mouse if it's jumping around on you. Change it's just a dirty lens / ball tracker.

Another option is just crack your skull open to the point you go blind. That way, you don't need a mouse anymore at all, and just rely on keyboard shortcuts instead. :)
