Have to admit it is gross ( and very common) to be sitting on the beach in pattaya and step off your bed only to tramp on one or more cigarette butts as most smokers seem to believe that if they bury their finished butts under a 1mm layer of sand that that it's gone and done with - unfortunately that's rarely the case of course.

So, if smokers would perhaps take more care then perhaps non smokers wouldn't get so pissed with them. ( Apologies in advance to all those considerate smokers who DO try not to inflict their choices on others, but alas they appear to be in the minority these days)

Mind you typical Thailand - whilst I dont disagree with some form of penalty ( small 1000 baht on the spot fine perhaps?) but to suggest that throwing a cigarette butt on the beach could incur up to a year in jail is of course just ludicrous and actually rather than enforcing the point on the new law i.e it's to encourage people to be thoughtful about others and the environment etc it actually just takes away from the whole thing and makes it sound just a little bit ridiculous as of COURSE no one is going to jail for a year for that - are they !??

Mind you being Thailand that is likely designed just more to give the Police a bigger bargaining position on site for when THEY are trying to extract their unofficial on the spot fines from the smoker as they threaten them with their one year jail sentence - how very considerate of the Government !

As already mentioned I'm sure many non smokers could give you a few suggestions re that - but seriously though that's a MAD question Joe, I mean would you ask the same about litter - i.e if there's no bin handy what would you suggest I do with my litter - why you'd KEEP it of course until you found a bin, same as YOUR butt, you wouldn't should take care of THAT too as it is YOUR rubbish, why would you even think that it would be someone else's problem to suggest to you what you should do with your butts !?

You are right of course that if the vendor is aware people wish to smoke then it miight be a good idea of him to provide ashtrays, but if not then the LEAST you could do would be to throw your butt in a bin or something and not just throw it away or try to secretly bury it in the sand for the next ussuspecting soul to walk over in their bare feet - and all because you decided you wanted a smoke and to hell with everyone else.

Tell me do you still eat chewing gum ? And if so when finished and if you can't see a bin to wrap it and chuck it into do you just stick that underneath your seat / table too as hey it's not YOUR fault that there's no bins there ?

Ashtrays have always been provided on the Dongtan beach and yesterday there was no change in that policy. Two sat in front of me, lit up and that was my que to leave.

Jeez, you non-smokers need to take a time out, and relax. It's no big deal for me not to go to the beach at Pattaya or Jomtien. The Beer Garden is close enough.
The stated reason for the beach cigarette ban is not to deprive you of your right to smoke as there will be receptacles before you enter the controlled areas, just like entering a mall. I personally(as an ex-smoker) have no issues with your right to smoke but your right ends at the tip of my nose. Two days ago, I had to leave the beach early when two Russians sat in front of me and lit up. That they were using ashtrays was of no consequence.
Smokers can relax, as a long time resident of Pattaya I can say with confidence that this smoking ban will not be enforced in the long-term.

I`ve been a regular at the beach for many years and I`ve always hated smokers at the beach. It has nothing to do with where their butts go and everything to do with where their smoke goes, especially those that light up one after the other...constantly. Like when I`m trying to have a quick meal. I`ve never understood how people can mix smoking with eating. You can say one nationality is worse than others when it comes to smoking but this has changed over the years as nationalities hanging out down there have changed over time.

I try to position myself in a spot at the end of a row, near another regular who I know doesn`t smoke. There`s not much I can with the chairs in front and behind me or if a friend who does smoke wants to sit near me, or has a trick in tow who smokes. I`m thankful for the ban, I`m thinking of a return visit soon....now that I`ve just retired.

Yeah, there's recycling depots all over the place here. Just live here for a while, and you'll notice people going through the garbage, looking for empty bottles, because many people are dicks and don't seperate their bottles from their garbage.

We have this old (very poor) lady we save our bottles for. We have a seperate garbage can out front for bottles, and keep them all nicely packaged in black garbage bags for her. We're good people like that. :)
