The 'smilie' problem ...

Folks, I think our esteemed Admin needs our help with understanding how pervasive (or perhaps it's not, but no one seems to know!) is this problem with little red X's all over the place in the Compose Message window.

The problem is that Elephant does not see what I/we see. His Compose Message window seems to be OK. So he cannot help us without knowing the extent of the problem.

I think that the fact that at least a few people can see the smilies suggests that it is a user-end problem. I'm not sure what it could be. Have you tried bkkguy's suggestions?

I don't have any replies yet on my topic regarding this on phpBB.com. I'll bump it soon.

I'm also thinking that if lots of people were experiencing this problem, then I'd have heard from them, but other than the 4 people who have responded on the other thread about the new smilies:

and the 8 people who responded in this poll that they can not see the smilies, I have heard nothing. I'm going to move this poll to the main forum for now, just to increase its exposure. I'd like to know how many people can not see the smilies.

OK, That is useful information, I think. I have re-imported the new smilie pak and deleted existing smilies. Can everyone at least now see the 20 new smilies to the left of the compose box where the old smilies used to be? :bounce:

I'm hoping so. I think I can find a way to re-enter the basic smilies so that they show to the left of the compose window again, but I'm not sure how just yet. But at least there are smilies there for everyone now, and not little red "X"s, right?

Some new ones moved to the front, old ones to the back.

FYI: (anyone who didn't know.) Once you open "View more Emoticons" & select a smallie, the screen runs in back until you close it. If you click on, "View more Emoticons" at the right of the compose screen, nothing will happen. Reduce the compose screen and the emulsion screen will be running in back--or click on the thingamabob at the bottom bar & it will pop up.

I used to get 4 smilies and the rest nice red crosses. Please let me know how to get the red crosses both in my Compose screen and messages. I have just un-ticked the Disable Smilies in this post. Can anyone tell me how to make my Avotar larger? If I do it has too many pixels.

The problem is very simple. Each smilie requires a separate tcp/ip connection to the server to download it. So, opening uip the compose reply screen straight away opens up 20 channels jut for smilies, let alone all the others needed by the screen. Trouble is there are only 32 channels by default in Windows (there are tweaks to up the number to 200 or 300) so some have to wait. There is a time limit set for the download, if the system hasn't managed to get them by the time limit you see the red cross. If you are using IE you can right click the red cross and select "show picture", and it will download just that one. Of course, if you have done it once, then the smilies are saved in your browser cache, so you won't see nearly as many red crosses next time round. The extra emoticons page opens up a huge number of links.
If you want to see it in action, download a little utility called tcpview and run it. clear your browser cache, and then open up the extra emoticons page. tcpview will go mad, just watch how long it takes to subside.

As of this morning, all smilies are now in their proper place and smiling at me on the left

To The Admin ... until this morning things were as before (red x's). I did precisely nothing to fix this problem at my computer (except a lot of refreshin' as per BkkGuy). Now they are fixed. So I don't think it was ~ to coin a phrase ~ My End that was the problem.
