The German parliament has approved a bill that not only overturns the convictions of those found guilty and in many cases jailed as homosexuals since the end of World War 2, but also compensation for those still alive. This amounts to a one-off payment of €3,000 and €1,500 for each year of imprisonment. The bill applies to those convicted between 1949 and 1969 when homosexuality was decriminalized. It also applies to those convicted in the old East Germany before the law changed at a later date.

The justice ministry said it believes about 68,300 people were convicted under various forms of Paragraph 175 in both German states before it was scrapped in 1994.

Excluded from rehabilitation are men who were convicted for homosexual acts with children, or for violent or threatening behavious.
