Part of the northern end of the eastern runway will be closed during the above period to facilitate replacing the concrete asphalt with "modified asphalt". One taxiway will also be closed during this period. The airport's general manager has said the runway will remain open as the remaining 2,750 meters can accommodate all aircraft, including the A380.

Nevertheless delays are expected and airlines have been asked to carry fuel for an additional contingency of between 60 to 90 minutes as the number of movements will be restricted from 68 to 60 per hour. As if that is not bad enough, U-Tapao will be on stand-by as a back-up if flights are unable to land at BKK.

So if you are arriving at BKK during a peak period, stand-by for considerable delays!
