Those interested in the Thailand of the mid-19th century may be interested in an Exhibition at River City - “Siam through the Lens of John Thomson: 1865-66”. This includes 60 historical photographs including some of the Royal Family of those times. The Exhibition runs until January 15 at the RCB Galleria on the second floor of River City. Admission is Bt. 150.

Scottish photographer John Thomson spent ten years in East Asia starting in Singapore in 1862. His then travelled extensively in Malaysia, Sumatra, Ceylon, India, Thailand, Cambodia, Hong Kong, around many parts of China and finally Formosa. There have been previous Thomson exhibitions in Bangkok, notably one at the National Museum two years ago. I am not sure if this exhibition has new photographs or is mostly made up of those from the earlier exhibition. Whatever, they are certainly worth seeing again and will make for a pleasant hour or so by the river.

There is a free shuttle boat departing from Saphan Taksin which serves River City. But it is only an hourly service. You can also get a free shuttle to the next-door Royal Orchid Sheraton Hotel which runs every 30 minutes on the hour and half-hour. Or take one of the regular public boats to Sri Phraya Pier for a few Baht.
