View Full Version : Resizing Photo's

This may have been asked before but I cannot find any mention in the search.

As a complete dunce when it coomes to anything techy', your advice and help is requested.

I take digital snaps all the time and some I would like to post here on the board in the album section. However, I tend to take large frame pic's on my camera so as to get greater clarity and detail when printing pics. I don't know, but assume, this makes my pics rather large and do not fit into the bandwidth/size allowance for posting here.

My digital pics are on my computer as jpg files, which are displayed on my Mac in the viewer called 'Preview'. I have tried taking screenshots/screen grabs of the opened pics and these then convert into tiff files. I have no idea how to make my pics smaller or to get them into a format that will allow for posting.

Please help this idiot. Thanks.

Not too sure about resizing with a Mac - but for XP users here is a simple method

One of the best (and easiest!) methods of manipulating your photos ~ including resizing, sharpening, adding or subtracting colour, saving as other types of files etc etc etc ~ is to download a free copy of Irfanview ( http://www.irfanview.com ~ link to download page and instructions is on the opening home page ). It supports Mac.

Been using Irfanview for years (I'm no techie!) and ~ like all software ~ once you get the hang of it, it's simple.

After you've reduced the size of your image using Irfanview, to get a photo into a message straight from your hard drive just click on the little link located below the Compose Message area called Add image to post and follow the instructions (which really are as simple as auto-browsing your "My Pictures" folder ... or whatever it's called on the Mac).

If you wish to upload a full photo into a message you'll have to get yourself a web-based photo album and host them on the WWW before getting the image into a post. One of the most popular (free) web-albums is http://www.photobucket.com , but there are many around. Just be sure when choosing an album that it allows sharing images: some, like (I believe) Yahoo and Geocities do not.

Another alternative would be to open up an album right here on Sawatdee Forum. Just upload your (reduced!) photos to the album and you can use that as a host to put any individual photo into a posting.
Hope this helps and is not overly complicated. PM me if you want further help ... no problem.

Cheers ...

FM: Many digital cameras come with editing software and that software usually has a re-sizing function (you might want to learn to crop photos and clear them up also). You may already have a program.
For posting photos here, I usually re-size them to about 500-600 pixels in width and that usually means a photo which has a total size of about 75kb.

Thanks to all for the advice especially Smiles, unfortunately I could not run Irfanview on my mac but found Igallery http://www.daniele.ch/downloads.html to be very useful.

I have now managed to resize and upload one pic (amazing!) to my gallery here. Unfirtunately it only appears now quite small even when not in the thumbnail gallery, so something I have to work on there I think.

But thanks again for the advice, you led me in the right direction.
