Much of the discussion in chat rooms nowadays is about gay for pay which is clearly what most readers want to hear about. If you’re just in Thailand for a short holiday it’s no doubt the easiest way of getting precisely what you want.

Some posters also suggest that those of us who are considerably longer in the tooth and whose girth has increased will have much more difficulty in finding pure non-commercial fun merely for the sake of it compared to our younger and fitter colleagues. I have consistently suggested this is often far from fact. My recent trip to Udon Thani bears this out.

One reason for the trip was to spend time with a student I have been chatting with for a couple of months. He was wonderful. Sure, I paid for dinner and our breakfast was part of my hotel package, but he asked for absolutely nothing else. Sadly, I knew he had to be away for a university trip and I would be left with a lot of time on my hands. So I got on to Hornet, Jack'd and Grindr. Perhaps because it was the weekend, I had 53 guys wanting to chat with me and most wanting to meet up - with Hornet being by far the most active. Only one guy brought up the issue of money and I politely ended that conversation. With the others I stressed the major age gap and was consistently met with the refrain "age doesn't matter"! Around half just weren't my type. Most of the rest I'd have happily spent time with!

Most guys were quite nearby. It wasn’t till after we met that the one whom I really liked, a teacher, and with whom I spent a great afternoon had driven more than 100 kms just to meet up. He wouldn't take anything more than a Starbucks coffee. His English was good and if he lived in Bangkok he would be very much bf material for anyone, I'm sure.

Whilst Udon is far from my idea of paradise, there sure are a lot of non-commercial guys around wanting to meet older faring.

It isn't paradise, but me personally like this area. We (bf + me) have many friends in this province.

Just in case somebody will visit: great place to spend day at the lake - lake Phan (GPS 17.857833, 103.057311)

Those floating rafts look quite charming but just where do you take a dump?

Fountainhall...Great read.

I always enjoy going up country but usually have a boy in tow. The times I've been alone have been by far the best. I don't search the apps for hook-ups and prefer just cruising the local night markets which usually pays dividends.

I was able to get a roundtrip airline ticket from Utapao Airport to Udon for 2,000 baht last November which was great. I didn't stay in Udon as I just wanted to explore the riverfront in Nong Khai which is a short bus ride from Udon.

Your post should encourage those who don't know what treasures are hidden up north, and as you said, there are pleny of friendly (and eager) boys who would jump at the chance to hook-up with a farang regardless of his age.

I visited the small town of Phrae (North/Central Thailand) once during Songkran and had an amazing time. No sooner than I hit the sois taking pictures of a small parade going down the main soi in town, I met a group of gay boys who were dripping wet and already half mau and just having a blast. My eyes immedately zeroed in on this one very cute fem type boy who later on took on the task of being my personal guide for the rest of the day and night. He stayed with me at my hotel for the 3 days I was in town and never once asked for money. I left 2 thousand baht notes and my mobile number scribbled on a piece of paper on top of his blue jeans the morning of my departure and decided to just let him sleep. We were both very mau the night before and he may still be sleeping in that bed from all I know.

A few days later I received a call from him thanking me for the money I had left him. We cultivated plans to meet again during my next return to Thailand but that never came to be.

Thailand...you just gotta luv it!

And not just up north. My travels around the country have taken me to many places, sometimes just for regular visits as to Chiang Mai, but others for special occasions. At the Ubon Candle Festival some years ago, on a short trip to Maha Sarakham and at the 2014 Dansai Ghost Festival there was no problem in meeting up with non-commercial local guys. Amazing Thailand!
