One lesson learnt - don't arrive at a hotel / guest house too late to find an alternative.

I arrived here at about 9:30 at night after flying in from the UK via BKK and was too tired to start looking for an alternative - so what was wrong with this place

1 the reception area was full of dogs - about six of them - yes they were small dogs and some were in pens where they slept.

2 the room - this was a twin room and not the double I had booked - they said they had no other rooms available as they were full [??? only saw 2 other guests]. The lighting was very poor - even with all 3 lights on the room was dimmly lit - even at mid day.

3 storage space - the wardrobe had 3 hangers but was so narrow you probably couldn't hang more than about 4 or 5 hangers any way - most of my clothes stayed in the suitcase.

4 room safe - there wasn't one and you had to supply your own padlock for the safe box at reception.

5 breakfast - one slice of toast, a glass of juice and a small plate of fresh fruit

There is some building work going on in the garden area but not sure if this is for new rooms or is something else.

If it was so bad why didn't I check out? as i was only going to be there a few days and already had my time organised i didn't have the time to move out.

I've only been to CM once, but got lucky. I rented a small Thai styed bungalow at "Coffee Boy" and it was great. The rooms, which are nestled in the lush landscaping of this century old property, are basic but clean and fully furnished.

This being my first trip to CM, I relied on the assistance of one of the Coffee Boy gogo dancers to help me get familiar with my room. He was great.

At the time (2 years ago) the room charge was 450 bt/night...and the Thai owner, who is schooled in the U.S. speaks perfect English and has a wonderful ourgoing personality. I just wonder if it's still there?

On various visits to Chiang Mai I have stayed at Lotus PSK, Rydges Amora, Viangbua Mansion and, most recently, PJ's Place. This latter suits me down to the ground and I wouldn't stay anwhere else. Great attention to detail, bright lighting in the rooms, shaving mirror equal to that at the Peninsula Bangkok, crisp white linens, wonderful hospitality... and so on. Roll on Loy Krathong/Yi Peng. :drunken:

This is disappointing to hear, as I'm booked to stay there during my next visit to LOS (and first to Chiang Mai). But thanks BeardedBrian for the info....and thanks billyhouston for the hotel recommends. Does anyone else have any other hotel recommendations for Chiang Mai? And, the Come On Place website is so attractive! Thanks for the info.

Coffee boy brings back memories and I too would like to know if it is still in existence.

Pronto, 2 suggestions for accommodation in Chiang Mai.
Raming Lodge, 17 - 19 loi kroh road. Tel 053 - 271777. Rooms around 1500 Baht per night including breakfast. Beautiful hotel recently opened.
Second suggestion, Chiangmai Travel Lodge, 18 Kampangdin Road. Tel 053 - 272448 - 9. Rooms 450 Baht per night, breakfast NOT included. Both are in great locations in walking distance from the Night Market and bars.

Last time I was in Chiang Mai, January of this year, Coffee Boy was closed.

Try Chiang Mai Gate Hotel, the hotel wing. Basic but cheap, and nice to be away from the main tourist area, but still convenient.

I enjoy staying at the Hotel Montri. Rooms are about 800 Baht. It was fairly recently renovated so the paint is fresh and the mattress new. Central location. Taxis always available but it is an interesting walk to the Night Bazaar if you enjoy walking. Suggestion: Ask for a room on the back side if traffic noise bothers you.

I enjoy staying at the Hotel Montri.
I also like the Montri and consider it to be a good bargain. We preferred a room in the front with a nice view of the Thapae Gate, but I can see how those who are sensitive to noise might have problems with the front rooms. The downside of the rooms on the back is that there is no view. The hotel's restaurant also has good value Thai food in a nice setting, but for breakfast there are better values to be had within a short walk of the hotel.

" ... Suggestion: Ask for a room on the back side if traffic noise bothers you ... "
Or, even better, ask for a room on the back side of the hotel, corner room. If I recall the corner rooms are the same price (perhaps 100 baht or so more ... not much more than that), but the size is much larger than a middle-located room (which are quite small).

Cheers ...

I always stay at the Lotus (the gay one , not the huge resort hotel). I book a superior room, finding the standard ones too small. The hotel has friendly staff and is located across the soi from Adam's Apple. Some find its location not to their liking because it is in a residential area but I find this a pleasant contrast to my other Thailand haunts in Pattaya and Bangkok. It is true, however, that a bus is needed if you want to go into CM proper or visit the large shopping malls- and House of Male, for that matter. There are a few gay venues within walking distance, not far from Novotel
