View Full Version : The covers of gay magazines. Why always muscular types?

Some personal remarks I want to make.

It has taken me a long time to see myself as gay in the conventional sense, because most men above 25 are not attractive to me (unless they are Asian; then the upper limit is quite higher).
So I have always thought: "I am a very special kind of gay, because I see gay couples of 40 and 50 who love each other and feel (I assumed) sexually attracted to each other, but I only feel attraction for younger bodies: 16-25 on average". I also do not like muscular bodies, but as good as all gay magazines always spot a well developed muscular guy on their cover. Spartacus never has a twink on its cover. So growing up I always had the idea: I am not gay like other people are gay. I like skinny bodies and above 25 it is fast getting too old for me.

But I soon discovered (by visiting gay saunas, gay clubs and now gogo bars in Thailand) that I am not special at all. My preference is the preference of the majority of gays. Yes of course there are sub cultures (Bears for example) with other preferences, but they are (in my experience) a minority.

So why then do all gay magazines spot a muscular guy around 25-30 on the cover? It doesn't match with what I daily experience. It is not the preference in my view of the majority of gays.
Only the more feminine types go for that. But most gays I know do not act feminine. Do not talk with that 'gay' lisp sound.

More of your guys notice that the covers of gay magazines rarely show a guy you feel attracted too?

What gay magazines are you talking about? The Thai ones? Remember they don't cater exclusively to Westerners who, after all, are often sublimating certain feelings. They are also catering for the Asian queens of Hong Kong and Singapore who visit Thailand so they can be fucked over by "real" men.

Asian or western really not important, do you want to have sex with Bruce Jenner (you know way back last century ) or Liberace?

I mean European magazines. Look at the Spartacus covers. Look at any gay magazine I know about. Never ever you see a 18-20 year old twink on the cover. Always a masculine guy around 25-30. ALWAYS.
Well as good as always. I can't remember the last time I did see a twink on the cover of a gay magazine. (I am not talking about porn magazines).

Yes. And you never wonder why? In my experience twinkish guys are by far the most popular in the gay world. You wouldn't know by looking at the magazine covers of gay magazines.

It's not just the gay magazines. Photos of muscular boys seem much more common on the internet.
Also, if with boy bands, only the muscular ones do photo shoots with their shirts off.

However, it probably is most surprising with the gay magazines, considering a good proportion of their readers will prefer twinks.

Gay publications are terrified of appearing to feature under-age guys. Thais look younger than falangs of a similar age so the magazines play safe.

But you also do not see white twinks in Europe on covers and they look their age, no risk of confusion there.

I can only judge about the gay magazines distributed in Thailand (Thaipuan, Desire (former Variety) and Max; Out in Thailand has no cover boy): in several years of reading these magazines, there were a few boys who are bordercases, the vast majority is no my type. No twinks, all too muscular (often more fat than muscle) and often tattoos.

A necessary antidote to the pubescent, tattooed anorexics that inhabit that dreadful Sunnee Place in Pattaya.
