I see the US has nominated its former Ambassador to North Korea as ambassador to Thailand - he should feel right at home.

Well he wasn't an ambassador - just a policy wonk based in Washington. He's a career foreign service staffer and his Thailand appointment is only for 6 months for some reason.

Where's the announcement that it's only a 6-month appointment fountainhall? The piece I read said that the Ambassadorship had been vacant for six months, not that the appointment was for six months.

Interesting that this would be his first time as an ambassador. I would think with the current issues facing USA-Thailand relations, they would appoint someone with some experience in that type of position.

I don't know much about his background, but have not seen anything that points to any special knowledge or experience regarding Thailand specifically.

I know this will be ego-shattering for you a447 but you're on my Foes list, or whatever it's called, so yours are not the first or even second posts that I read and to which I respond since I can't actually read them until I choose to. All the intelligent, thoughtful or interesting people get a response or a comment first, and then I turn my attention to the dregs, such as you. I do that by leveraging off the RSS facility supported by the Board, skim through all the posts and then decide if there's anything that will amuse me. As I know your trip reports are merely pornography I don't need to (nor do I) read them closely in order to comment on them or about them. Occasionally however there is a gem of personal information or, more likely, foolishness that I tuck away for future use.

It's unlikely that there will be a new ambassador for several months.
The appointment has to be ratified by the U.S. Senate and the mood they're in, they won't be ratifying any Obama appointments any time soon.
