For those who are interested, a reminder that Songkran is not just a Thai festival, or a SE Asian festival, or even a Buddhist festival. Its origins lie in Hinduism (not forgetting that Angkor was originally a Hindu kingkom and the Khmers formerly Hindus). The Thai king has always maintained at least one Hindu priest in residence to perform Hindu rites on appropriate occasions.

It's also Vaisakhi on April 14th the festival marks the start of the New Year in the Nanakshahi solar calendar and recognizes the Sikh religious faith.
Perhaps I'm wrong, but as another New Year's festival...I'm thinking the origins of Songkran are more Pagan and Agricultural in origin.
