When I go to the Grand Palace I take a boat up river. It's the fastest, cheapest (Bt. 16) and easiest way to go. If I want to hit Ramkhamhaeng or The Mall at Bangkapi, I take the MRT to Petchburi station and then head for the nearby klong boat stop.

Finally the BMA has realised the potential for much more klong travel as a way of relieving some of the city's traffic jams. 9 major klongs are to be cleaned up to pave the way for new boat services. Klong Lat Phrao will be the first canal targeted and developed.

I read somewhere that there were several canal boat lines east of the Chao Phraya, all except Saen Saep were shut down during the 1997 crisis.

There is/was at least one line west of Chao Phraya (Klong Phasicharoen), but only for morning and evening commute.

Updated: mentioned in the quote in the op

A source at City Hall said the BMA wants a new boat service along Khlong Lat Phrao after a trial service on Khlong Phasi Charoen proved a success. The service attracts about 2,300 passengers a day.The free trial service which ends in May will start operating permanently and passengers will be charged.

Saen Saep boats are not suitable for sightseeing, you sit low and the view is further blocked by tarpaulin so passengers don't get wet. Whereas Chao Phraya boat is great for sightseeing.

The klong boat I've taken is the same. Only good for seeing much if you stand at the back. But the aim of these boats is commuting - and there's not really much to see anyway!
