In Google Translate, the word тАЬgayтАЭ throws up hateful slurs

Google is listening to feedback this week - call on them to fix their translation now,

"Faggot". "Poof". That's what Google Translate suggests when you type the word тАЬgay." 500 million people use Google Translate every month. ThatтАЩs a lot of people being taught hateful words and insults.

Google is listening out for feedback this week, as they just launched a new version of their translation app. Google already has the technology to filter out hateful language: typing тАЬfemaleтАЭ doesnтАЩt throw up sexist words.

Sign now to ask Google тАУ known as a pro-equality company тАУ to remove anti-gay slurs from its translation:

go.allout.org/en/a/google-translate

Translating from English into Spanish, French or Portuguese, the web version of Google Translate throw up insults like "faggot", "poof", "fairy" and "dyke". These words are given as synonyms for "homosexual", "gay" or "lesbian".

Google has a pretty good record on equality. They pulled an anti-gay game from their app store and have even run campaigns against anti-gay laws around the world. So thereтАЩs a high chance theyтАЩll prioritise fixing their anti-gay Google Translate if they hear from thousands of All Out members.

This isnтАЩt just about political correctness gone mad. Degrading language feeds negative attitudes and stereotypes. And anti-gay slurs can lead to bullying and attacks on lesbian, gay, bi and trans people.

Call on Google to fix their anti-gay translation now: go.allout.org/en/a/google-translate

Together, we have achieved amazing things. All Out members pushed a conference in Switzerland to drop extremist activist Lou Engle from the agenda, where he was going to gather more support for his anti-gay work. In Uganda, we got telecoms giant Orange to stop advertising in a Ugandan tabloid famous for тАШoutingтАЩ lesbian, gay and trans people. Now letтАЩs make sure Google doesnтАЩt promote anti-gay slurs.

Thanks for going All Out,

P.S. Did you know Google translates "gay" using hateful slurs? If thousands of us speak out, we can and get them to remove this harmful, anti-gay language: go.allout.org/en/a/google-translate

This PC latest-discovery-of-outrage has absolutely nothing to do with Thailand ... notwithstanding the thread below regarding Thais referring to gays as Big Hairy Bears.

Only if all 500 million are typing "gay" into Google.

Despite smiles contribution there has been success.

We won! Thanks to our mobilisation, Google implemented a fix on Friday to take out anti-gay slurs from its translation tool. Google even apologized.
Imagine learning English and being taught to say hateful insults instead of neutral language for тАЬgayтАЭ? Google Translate тАУ used by over 500 million people every month тАУ was suggesting slurs as synonyms for the word тАЬgay".
Thousands of us signed the urgent petition and Google heard us. This is how powerful we are when we stand together.

P.S. - Here is what Google told the media about our people-power mobilisation: "As soon as we were informed...we immediately worked to fix the issue. We apologize for any offense this has caused people." Click here to share the victory on Facebook.
P.P.S. - If you see any anti-gay insults still popping up in Google Translate, let the All Out staff team know by replying to this email: your feedback will be passed on to Google right away.
