Bridge over the River Cock ( Kok ) !

So, ( and I'm jesting here) anyone planning a short trip up to the Chang Mai region to view all the hard work of the Top Gear presenters ( and no doubt a squad of a hundred or more Thai labours) after they built a "Bridge over the River Cock" as it was so described by Jeremy Clarkson ( actually it was across the River Kok).

To be fair for it being a temporary structure ( I wonder is it still there even ?) that was thrown up in in Bamboo in just two weeks ( apparently ??) I thought it actually looked quite presentable and it did (just) manage to get the guys and their heavy lorries across the river - although watching them cross was a truly nerve wrecking sight in parts :-) So, anyone else see the show ?

I watched it ,mainly for the stunning scenery they passed through ..Oh no sorry, that was the hairy bikers ..lol
I am afraid Clarkson just grates on my nerves, and the show is so contrived, it is painful to watch .
The bridge did look good though, although must have been built by an army of Thais as you say .
I wonder what they did with the lorries after, as there was no road on the other side of the river ..lol

Yes perhaps - but one that over 5.6 million people in the UK alone seem to enjoy each and every week - silly them, whatever are they thinking having their own preference as to what type of TV entertainment they enjoy watching !

Gave up on this show years ago.

isn't Hammond kind of half a cutie though?
kind of a car buff here and I have watched the show a few times
and the show is actually better than the American version of Top Gear.

understand why Bridge Over the River Kok wouldn't go down here.

If IтАЩm not mistaken the riverтАЩs name is pronounced g├▓k, which I think means reed, so Reed River, or m╞Р╞Р-n├бam g├▓k in Thai.

I wonder if Jeremy Clarkson was advised about the correct pronunciation, but chose to ignore the advice.

ItтАЩs the same standard Romanized form which means words written as тАШkhтАЩ are pronounced тАШkтАЩ, but a word that starts with a тАШkтАЩ and followed by any other letter is pronounced as a тАШgтАЩ. Another example of this is island. The Thai for island is, g╔Ф, (gaw) as in g╔Ф samui, but is written as koh Samui.

Yet another example, which I find irritating at Thai school, is words starting with тАШchтАЩ are correctly pronounced тАШchтАЩ, but words starting with тАШcтАЩ and any other letter are pronounced тАШjтАЩ. An example of this is plate, which is written in its Romanized form as caan, but pronounced jaan.

Transliteration for Thai is utterly exasperating. Take it with a dose of humour.

That's why I recommend starting reading and writing in Thai immediately, without Romanization (from my own experience!). By the time you have learnt your school/book's system of Romanization (others have different systems!), you have learnt half of the Thai alphabet.

I enjoy the show for what it is. The three of them have established the characters or caricatures that they play long ago. Sure they do a lot of stupid stuff. But they go on some trips to pretty beautiful locations. Definitely the original is head and shoulders better than the pale American imitation that was tried for a couple of years.

All of the supercars they drive are just porn for gearheads since normal people would never be able to get close to those vehicles. Some of the challenges are interesting.

Unfortuantely I didn't get to see all of the Thailand/Burma episode. But they play on repeat on BBC America frequently.
